Final Fantasy 7 Revelation is set to make its toughest difficulty more flexible. Unlike Final Fantasy 7 Remake and Rebirth, the trilogy’s concluding game will let players select Hard Mode from the beginning, rather than locking it behind a completed playthrough.

Director Naoki Hamaguchi has worked on the remake project for almost a decade and will continue refining it ahead of Final Fantasy 7 Revelation’s scheduled launch on 8 April 2027. Some fans have even suggested he should direct Final Fantasy 17.

Hard Mode will be available immediately

The earlier games required players to finish the story before accessing their higher difficulty setting. Revelation changes that structure, giving experienced players the option to begin on Hard Mode straight away.

The mode is also being redesigned to remove some of its strictest limitations. There will be no item bans, allowing players to develop a wider range of builds. Encounters will still reward careful planning, but players will have more freedom to experiment with their preferred strategies.

Hamaguchi explained that the decision is connected to the substantial post-game content unlocked after completing Final Fantasy 7 Revelation. Delaying Hard Mode could force players to choose between starting another run at their preferred difficulty and moving through the post-game material first.

Dynamic Mode returns for a more even challenge

Hamaguchi also confirmed the return of Dynamic Mode. This setting adjusts enemy strength to match the party’s current level, helping maintain a consistent challenge while players explore the world and complete optional quests.

That scaling is designed to prevent extended exploration from making the party so powerful that later battles become effortless. Players can spend time on side content without automatically overwhelming every subsequent encounter.

As in the previous games, changing difficulty will likely require players to restart the chapter they are currently playing. The source material presents this as an expectation rather than a confirmed feature.

What the changes mean for players

These adjustments give Revelation’s difficulty options a clearer purpose: Hard Mode caters to players seeking a demanding run from the outset, while Dynamic Mode is intended to keep the broader adventure balanced as levels rise.
