Fast Forever remains in development, although director Louis Leterrier has confirmed he has not yet read the latest screenplay that left Vin Diesel in tears.

Fast Forever is still moving slowly

Three years after Fast X concluded with a cliffhanger, the planned finale has not entered production. Leterrier remains attached to direct, but the sequel did not follow immediately because of the Hollywood strike and his decision to make another film, The Last House, for Netflix.

Leterrier said there is an alternate version of events in which he moved directly from Fast X into the next instalment. Instead, the production schedule changed while he pursued the other project.

What happened after Fast X?

The director’s comments provide a clear indication that development slowed after the 2023 release of Fast X. Vin Diesel announced a March 2028 release date for Fast Forever earlier this year, but few additional details have been made public, including who would direct it.

Leterrier still expects to direct the finale

Asked whether he was still making Fast Forever, Leterrier said he was not working on it at that moment because he was finishing another movie. He nevertheless confirmed that he remained involved and expected the franchise to receive an ending.

“This franchise will have an ending,” Leterrier said, joking that the series had built a ride and someone had to finish it.

His comments suggest that the film’s delay is more complicated than a simple cancellation. Leterrier also said he was grateful to have worked on the franchise and praised Vin Diesel and Universal as great collaborators.

Vin Diesel praises the new screenplay

Diesel recently told fans on Instagram that he had read the latest Fast Forever screenplay by Mike Leslie. He described it as the best script he had read in decades and said he was still crying after finishing it.

Leterrier, however, said he had not read that version of the script. When asked about the apparent difference, he indicated that he knew more than he could publicly explain, adding that he could not share the full truth.

For now, the available information points to a finale that remains planned rather than a production ready to begin. Diesel’s enthusiasm has provided the strongest recent update, while Leterrier’s remarks confirm that he still hopes to be behind the camera when the final chapter is made.
