Fallout Shelter: The Experiment will arrive on Prime Video on 13 January 2027, bringing the game-inspired franchise into reality television. The competition series will run for 10 episodes.

Amazon MGM is extending the Fallout brand after the scripted television adaptation became a major success. Its first season attracted more than 100 million views and received 17 Emmy nominations, including Outstanding Drama Series and Outstanding Lead Actor in a Drama Series for Walton Goggins, who plays The Ghoul.
The second season was also generally well received, while a third season is currently in production. Before that continues, viewers will be invited inside a different kind of Fallout vault.
What is Fallout Shelter: The Experiment?
The first teaser confirms the involvement of Bethesda Game Studios, Kilter Films and Studio Lambert, the production company behind The Traitors and Squid Game: The Challenge. Its central message is displayed on a Pip-Boy: “The world is ending. The competition is just beginning.”
Amazon describes the series as a competition set inside Vault-Tec’s bomb-proof shelters. Contestants will face increasingly difficult challenges, strategic decisions and moral dilemmas while competing for safety, influence and a substantial cash prize.
Set inside Vault-Tec’s bomb-proof vaults, Fallout Shelter drops a diverse group of contestants into an immersive, high-stakes world inspired by the games’ signature dark humor, retro-futurism, and post-apocalyptic survival storytelling. Across a series of escalating challenges, strategic dilemmas, and moral crossroads, contestants must prove their ingenuity, teamwork, and resilience as they compete for safety, power, and ultimately a huge cash prize.

The format takes its inspiration from Fallout Shelter, Bethesda’s 2015 construction and management simulation. That suggests the show will focus on groups of vault dwellers attempting to maintain order and survive in a post-apocalyptic environment, complete with the series’ familiar blue jumpsuits.
The S.P.E.C.I.A.L. attributes become competition rules
A casting call gives a clearer indication of how the games will work. Contestants, referred to as dwellers, will live together in a secret vault and compete in challenges based on Fallout’s seven core attributes: strength, perception, endurance, charisma, intelligence, agility and luck.
The dwellers (contestants) live together in a top-secret vault, where they will compete in a series of games that tests the seven core attributes from the Fallout world. Strength, perception, endurance, charisma, intelligence, agility and luck (S.P.E.C.I.A.L). The series will not only test dwellers’ core attributes, but also their loyalty and alliances. It’s a game of power dynamics, popularity and social strategy which will ultimately result in a huge cash prize, but do you have what it takes to be the most S.P.E.C.I.A.L?
Alongside physical and mental tests, the format is expected to examine alliances, loyalty, popularity and social strategy. The premise therefore sits closer to a social-elimination competition than a straightforward game-show quiz.
That approach creates an intentionally uneasy contrast with Fallout’s satire. The games are built around a fictional world shaped by nationalism, corporate exploitation and the collapse of society, while the contestants compete within that setting for entertainment and money. The concept also invites comparisons with Squid Game: The Challenge, another reality format adapted from a darker scripted property.

When will the scripted Fallout series return?
Amazon renewed the scripted Fallout series for a third season in 2025, shortly before the second season aired between December 2025 and January 2026. Production on season three began in July 2026, so its return is expected sometime in 2027.
That means Fallout fans have two television projects to watch for: the 10-episode reality competition launching on 13 January 2027, and the continuing scripted series, which is also likely to return during 2027. Readers planning a themed games room can also compare options in the arcade machine buying guide or consider a custom project through DIY arcade kits.
