Fallout season 3 has reached a significant production milestone, with Walton Goggins confirming that his work as The Ghoul has finished. The Prime Video adaptation is expected to return no earlier than 2027, although an exact release date has not been announced.
The update arrives as anticipation continues to build around the next chapter for Lucy, The Ghoul and Maximus. It also raises a larger question: could Goggins be preparing to leave the series after season 3?

Walton Goggins finishes filming as The Ghoul
Jake Garber, the series’ prosthetic makeup department head, shared a photograph of Goggins in full Ghoul makeup on Instagram. Garber announced that his own work on season 3 had wrapped, calling it an exceptional season before signing off for some rest.
Goggins then confirmed that his part of production was complete. In an Instagram post, he wrote that he had taken off The Ghoul’s makeup “for the last time”, accompanied by a video of himself driving while listening to Led Zeppelin’s Ramble On. He also said he would miss California until his next visit.

The wording is open to interpretation. Goggins may simply mean that he has finished filming season 3, but it could also suggest that he is stepping away from Fallout altogether. Because The Ghoul, also known as Cooper Howard, has been central to the story, his departure would be a major change for the series.
Goggins first revealed in July that he had started shooting the new season, describing himself as being “back in the saddle”.

Could Fallout continue beyond season 3?
Amazon MGM has not confirmed a fourth season. However, Aaron Moten, who plays former Brotherhood of Steel soldier Maximus, previously described a much longer potential story arc for the adaptation.
“When I signed on to do the series, we would have a starting point, and they gave me the endpoint,” Moten said at Comic Con Liverpool in 2025. “And that endpoint hasn’t changed. But it is season 5, [season] 6 type of endpoint. We’ve always known that we were gonna take our time with the development of the characters.”
That comment points to an ambitious long-term plan, but it is not confirmation that seasons 4, 5 or 6 have been ordered. For now, the future of both the show and Goggins’ character remains uncertain.
When will Fallout season 3 be released?
Prime Video has not announced a launch date for season 3. Based on the production schedules of earlier seasons, a return in late 2027 appears plausible, but that timing is not official.
Amazon renewed the post-apocalyptic science-fiction series in May 2025 and announced several new cast members: Aaron Paul, Emily Mortimer, Manny Jacinto and Thomasin McKenzie. Their roles have not yet been revealed.

The adaptation has already become a major success for Prime Video. Its first season had attracted more than 100 million views by October 2024 and received 17 Emmy nominations, including Outstanding Drama Series and Outstanding Lead Actor in a Drama Series for Goggins. Season 2 earned nine nominations and won two awards, despite criticism of some of its more circuitous storytelling.

For now, Goggins’ farewell-like message is best treated as a season 3 production update rather than proof that The Ghoul’s story is over. More details about the release window, new characters and the show’s long-term plans will need to come from Amazon MGM.
