Fallout 5 and Classic Fallout Remasters Confirmed by Bethesda

Bethesda is expanding its Fallout plans after years without a new mainline release. The publisher has confirmed development of Fallout 5, remasters of Fallout 3 and Fallout: New Vegas, and another project from Obsidian Entertainment.

The announcements form part of a wider investment in the post-apocalyptic role-playing series. Bethesda has not revealed release dates, platforms or technical details for the remasters, while Fallout 5 remains in pre-production.

Fallout 5 is a long-term Bethesda project

Bethesda Game Studios says it currently has multiple Fallout projects in active development. The studio describes Fallout 5 as its “long-range destination”, indicating that the next numbered entry is still some way from launch.

The roadmap also includes a substantial Fallout 76 expansion named Raven Rock. Planned for 2027, the expansion will tell a prequel story connected to Fallout 3.

Bethesda said in an official announcement that several Fallout projects are now in active development.

Bethesda has also confirmed long-running reports that Fallout 3 and Fallout: New Vegas are being remastered. No further information or launch window has been provided, although the projects are understood to have been in development for several years.

Evidence of a Fallout 3 remaster emerged publicly by 2020 through court documents associated with the US Federal Trade Commission’s litigation over Microsoft’s acquisition of Activision Blizzard.

These projects follow The Elder Scrolls 4: Oblivion Remastered, which was co-developed by Virtuos and Bethesda Game Studios. Bethesda also released Fallout 4: Anniversary Edition in 2025 to mark the game’s 10th anniversary.

The anniversary edition contains the original game, all six previously released downloadable content expansions and more than 150 items from the Fallout 4 Creation Club.

Fallout Day 2026 will be skipped

Bethesda will not hold a traditional Fallout Day broadcast in 2026. Instead, the studio says it is preparing a special event for the franchise’s 30th anniversary in 2027, when Fallout Day will be celebrated live in Washington, D.C.

Fallout Day is held on 23 October, the date of the Great War in the series’ fictional history. Bethesda marked the occasion in 2024 and 2025.

Where the remasters could take players

Fallout 3 originally launched in 2008 on PlayStation 3, Windows PC and Xbox 360. It was the third major Fallout game and Bethesda’s first entry after acquiring the franchise rights from Interplay Entertainment.

Set around Washington, D.C., two centuries after nuclear war, the game follows a 19-year-old Vault dweller searching for their missing father.

Fallout: New Vegas arrived in 2010 and was developed by Obsidian Entertainment. Its story takes place in the Mojave Desert, where a courier is drawn into a struggle between factions competing for control of the region.
