Fall 2: Deadpoint takes the survival horror of 2022’s Fall into much more open and unpredictable territory. Instead of repeating the first film’s tower-bound premise, directors Michael and Peter Spierig built the sequel around a perilous mountain route.

Their key inspiration was China’s Huashan Plank Walk, a real attraction famous for exposed paths, narrow planks and sheer drops. Thousands of people attempt versions of the route each year, offering the filmmakers a particularly daunting model for the sequel.

A mountain gives the danger room to move

The Spierig brothers had no interest in placing another group of characters on a similar tower. A sprawling mountain environment offered more options: threats could come from above, below or across the route, while the characters had greater freedom to move through the story.

Jax, played by Harriet Slater, and Luce, played by Arsema Thomas, are not simply waiting for rescue in one fixed location. Their journey exposes them to rotten planks, slippery surfaces and falling rocks as they make their way across the dangerous terrain.

Those physical obstacles also serve the sequel’s emotional story. Jax is still dealing with the death of her sister, Shiloh, from the first film. While Deadpoint is intended to stand on its own, it adds to the series’ wider mythology and helps establish the direction of Fall 3.

Michael and Peter Spierig have consulted on the third film, although it remains writer-director Scott Mann’s project. Michael has described the series as Mann’s trilogy and praised the work behind it.

Building a physical cliffside set

A major part of the sequel’s appeal for the directors was the chance to film outdoors. Rather than depending solely on a soundstage, the production created a simulated cliffside in a quarry. Performers worked on physical planks in natural sunlight while wind and rain machines made the conditions even more demanding.

The set was only around 40 feet above the ground, despite needing to appear thousands of feet high on screen. Some crew members questioned why the production had chosen to make the shoot so complicated, but the practical difficulties helped shape the performances.

Actors had to climb narrow planks while secured by harnesses, deal with heat and artificial weather, and maintain their characters’ fear under uncomfortable conditions. The audience may not always know which details were filmed practically and which were enhanced with visual effects, but the physical strain was designed to make the danger feel more immediate.

“When you go to the movies, you want an experience. You don’t want to feel like you’ve been ripped off.”

That philosophy matches the film’s grounded approach. As Michael explained, Fall 2 is not a superhero story; its central question is what a real person might be capable of achieving in extreme circumstances.

Climbing through a first-person lens

The filmmakers also drew on the visual style of amateur climbing footage. They attached a camera rig to the performers to create intimate point-of-view shots resembling the footage commonly seen from GoPros and on social media.

That perspective places viewers close to each unstable step and sudden drop. For a film titled Fall 2, making the act of falling look convincing and horrifying was clearly central to the production’s approach.
