Evil Dead Burn has quickly become one of 2026’s most-watched horror releases, reaching the top of HBO Max’s United States movie chart shortly after its early-October streaming debut.
The latest chapter in the long-running Evil Dead series arrives during a busy horror season that also includes Obsession, a new adaptation of Stephen King’s Carrie and another Resident Evil film. For viewers seeking particularly graphic practical effects and demonic mayhem, this sequel is the standout.
Why is Evil Dead Burn trending?
Evil Dead Burn reached No. 1 on HBO Max’s US film rankings within days of becoming available to stream. FlixPatrol’s listing tracks that rapid rise, although streaming-chart performance does not necessarily reflect universal critical approval.
The film currently holds a 70% critics’ score on Rotten Tomatoes. Reviews have highlighted its inventive kills, striking camerawork and detailed sound design, while also questioning whether its emotional themes and tonal shifts fully work.
What is Evil Dead Burn about?
The story follows Alice, played by Souheila Yacoub, who is mourning the death of her husband. She withdraws to an isolated family home with her in-laws, hoping to process the loss away from the outside world.
That fragile retreat collapses when demonic forces possess the family, transforming them into Deadites: undead attackers driven to prey on the living. Alice must then fight to stay alive as grief, family violence and supernatural horror collide.
Sébastien Vaniček directs, with Tandi Wright, Hunter Doohan and Luciane Buchanan also starring. Yacoub is known for Dune: Part Two, Doohan appeared in Wednesday, and Buchanan starred in The Night Agent.
Following 2023’s Evil Dead Rise, the new film tells another self-contained story rather than continuing a single ongoing storyline. Its approach combines extreme gore with the franchise’s familiar strain of slapstick horror.
Is Evil Dead Burn worth watching?
That depends on what you want from an Evil Dead film. The movie’s most successful moments use practical-looking effects, aggressive sound design and inventive deaths to deliver a deliberately unpleasant spectacle.
Its weaker area is the balance between grotesque horror and comedy. The attempts to connect the supernatural violence with grief and family conflict do not always form a convincing whole, which helps explain the mixed response despite the solid critics’ score.
For horror fans comfortable with graphic violence, demonic attacks and a deliberately excessive tone, Evil Dead Burn offers an obvious October watch. Australian viewers should check their local HBO Max availability, as the chart result referenced here applies to the United States service.
