Eternal Anima is a new role-playing game from Marvelous Entertainment that combines classic JRPG ideas with a striking time-manipulation system. After an hour with its preview build, its tactical battles became one of the most promising RPG concepts planned for 2027.

Why Eternal Anima stands out

Shown during a Nintendo Direct showcase in September, Eternal Anima introduces Wade, a mysterious soldier with amnesia, alongside a colourful group of magic users and freedom fighters. Their journey unfolds across a fantasy world threatened by destruction, with a large steampunk-inspired ship serving as their base as they cross its oceans.

The game’s unusual premise centres on time travel. Wade can visit events from the past, learn from ancient heroes and make changes that affect the future. That idea shapes the story, character development and, most effectively, the turn-based combat.

What is Eternal Anima?

The adventure takes place in Urvis Ael, a fantasy setting described as a false paradise where hoping for a better future is treated as a capital offence. Wade serves as a soldier there, but his unusual power, Psychometry, marks him as a heretic.

Psychometry allows Wade to read memories held within objects from the past and glimpse events that have not yet happened. Seeking answers, he throws himself into the sea and begins travelling through historical events across multiple continents, changing earlier moments to reshape what comes next.

The ability is divided into two important systems:

  • Inherit Wisdom: Wade can recover memories stored in artefacts and other objects, gaining classes and abilities along the way. During the preview, this gave him an archer’s skills. The system appears designed to let players combine different classes or jobs, creating a customised role that works alongside the rest of the party.
  • Future Sight: Battles display predicted enemy actions and their results on a visible timeline. Players can see when opponents intend to attack, then choose whether to defend, strike, heal or prepare a revival spell before the danger arrives.

Future Sight becomes especially interesting through Knock Back. Attacks can push an enemy’s action further along the timeline, interrupting the sequence of events. With enough focused damage, an opponent’s action can be pushed off the timeline altogether, removing that enemy’s turn.

A turn-based system built around timing

The timeline encourages a different style of decision-making from a conventional turn-based RPG. A defensive move or a weaker ability may happen sooner, allowing another party member to follow up later with a stronger attack.

It also makes incoming disasters easier to anticipate. Instead of reacting after a character is badly hurt, players can strengthen an ally or heal in advance, keeping the party ready for the next sequence of attacks.

Eternal Anima’s cast of heroes

Wade is joined by an eclectic supporting cast. The preview introduced Neria, an unwavering warrior devoted to freedom; the sentient Magick-Operated Sentinel, or MOS; and Martin, a rebellious and idealistic magic user.

These characters are fully voiced and bring distinct personalities to the group. Their individual histories are expected to become an important part of the wider journey, although the preview offered only an early look at their stories.

A retro foundation with modern ambitions

Much of Eternal Anima is deliberately familiar. Its developers describe the world as being dedicated to JRPG fans, and the game draws on recognisable ingredients: a memory-stricken hero, colourful companions, a threatened world and a journey spanning multiple regions.

That familiarity appears intentional. Inheritance and connections between different eras are themes within the story, while the design pairs retro JRPG influences with a more forward-looking combat system. The result could make Eternal Anima an unexpected standout among 2027’s role-playing games.

The creative team includes Katsuhisa Higuchi, whose previous work includes Chrono Trigger, Final Fantasy: Origins and Monster Hunter Stories. Scenario development is credited to Kazushige Nojima, Keisuke Makino and Hironao Fukuda, whose work spans series including Final Fantasy, Persona and Phoenix Wright.

Eternal Anima is scheduled to launch on 4 March 2027 for Nintendo Switch 2, PlayStation 5, Windows PC and Xbox Series X. For players interested in bringing more interactive entertainment home, RETROCADE also offers arcade machines, compact bartop arcades and virtual pinball machines.
