Dragon’s Dogma 2 is set to receive one of its most requested additions, with Capcom confirming that a hard mode is in development for the upcoming Dark Arisen release.
The news was shared on July 31 through the official Steam page, which published a question-and-answer session with director Kento Kinoshita and producer Naoto Oyama.
A tougher challenge is in development
Asked about the difficulty of the expansion, Kinoshita said the team is developing a hard mode for experienced players whose character statistics have reached, or are close to reaching, the level cap. Oyama added that further information about the feature’s release window will be provided later.
Kinoshita also indicated that the new expansion content is being designed to offer a greater challenge than the main game. That should give high-level Arisen and their Pawns a more demanding test when they enter the new adventure.
Capcom had previously suggested that a hard mode was under consideration for Dark Arisen, but the confirmation comes without much detail. It is not yet clear whether the mode will apply to the base game, the new expansion content, or both.
Release timing remains unclear
Oyama’s promise of a future release-window announcement may mean hard mode will not be available on the same day as Dark Arisen. However, Capcom could also introduce it before the expansion launches, giving players an opportunity to prepare for the tougher content. At this stage, neither possibility has been confirmed.

What Dark Arisen adds
Dragon’s Dogma 2: Dark Arisen will expand the 2024 action RPG with new story content and several quality-of-life changes. Capcom has already announced adjustments involving Dragonsplague and fast travel.
The expansion’s central addition is Norgan, a new region where the Forsaken Dominion storyline will unfold. Players will be able to explore that area alongside the other improvements planned for the release.
Dragon’s Dogma 2: Dark Arisen is scheduled to launch on October 9, 2026, for Nintendo Switch 2, PlayStation 5, Windows PC and Xbox Series X/S.
