Dragon’s Dogma 2’s upcoming Dark Arisen expansion will make Dragonsplague easier to understand, but the development team insists the dangerous mechanic is not being weakened.

That clarification came from DLC director Kento Kinoshita and producer Naoto Oyama in an email interview about the expansion. Dragonsplague affects Pawns, the non-player companions who can join the Arisen’s party. Initially, infection grants notable combat benefits while making a Pawn more assertive and less obedient. If it progresses unchecked, however, the Pawn transforms into a dragon capable of destroying an entire city.

At launch, the threat was deliberately difficult to identify. Players had to watch Pawn behaviour, consider the risks of recruiting companions online and decide whether to remove a potentially infected Pawn before the disease spread. That uncertainty made every new companion and dragon encounter feel hazardous.

Why Dragonsplague is becoming easier to read

Earlier updates already added several warnings and safeguards. Infected Pawns can display glowing red eyes before recruitment, a tutorial explains the disease, and its progression has been slowed. Casual Mode also prevents the city-destroying event altogether.

The upcoming updates will add further clarity. Menu information will show the buffs granted by Dragonsplague, and players will gain access to a potion that cures the condition completely. The development team says these changes communicate the system’s existing risk-and-reward design rather than removing its consequences.

“We have not reduced the negative impact of Dragonsplague itself,” Kinoshita said. He explained that the main problem was failing to communicate the infection’s benefits and symptoms clearly enough. The new update will display the statistical boosts and make infection easier to recognise through Pawn behaviour.

That interpretation changes the way the mechanic may be used. Rather than treating every infected Pawn as an immediate liability, players can choose to keep the combat boost temporarily, then decide when to use the Dragonsbaulk Draught. Waiting too long still carries the risk of catastrophic destruction.

For players who preferred Dragonsplague as an opaque source of dread, the additional information may feel like a reduction in tension. The developers, however, see it as a clearer version of the same gamble.

Accessing the Dark Arisen expansion

Most players should be able to begin the DLC by speaking with Brant in Vernworth. Those who have reached the game’s true-ending world state will not be able to accept the expansion quests there. They must complete the game and begin a New Game Plus run instead.

Future title updates are planned to make that process smoother. Kinoshita said the team intends to let players start New Game Plus with their progress carried over from the middle of a playthrough, as well as skip the opening section of the story.

New monsters and more character customisation

Oyama confirmed that the expansion contains more new monsters than those shown in its reveal trailer. Some will be redesigned versions of existing creatures, while others are entirely new. The team has not disclosed how many there are or identified them individually.

The developers have also noticed unexpected uses of the existing character creator. Players have used tattoos to create convincing, natural-looking fringe hairstyles. The expansion will add new hairstyle and tattoo variations, giving the community more options for unusual character designs.

A combat-focused expansion with a new setting

Kinoshita previously worked as a planner on Dragon’s Dogma 2 and directed the first game’s Dark Arisen DLC. Both mainline games were directed by Hideaki Itsuno, who also led work on Devil May Cry. Itsuno left Capcom in 2024 after 30 years and now leads Tencent’s LightSpeed Studios.

Kinoshita described the new expansion as combat-focused and designed for replayability, reflecting player requests for more adventures and battles in the game’s world. Unlike the original Dark Arisen, which expanded the first game with the dungeon-based Bitterblack Isle, this project uses a loot-driven combat loop in the new region of Norgan rather than simply creating another dungeon crawl.

Oyama said the expansion has been shaped by post-launch feedback, while long-serving members of the series team—including Kinoshita—have worked to retain the defining character of Dragon’s Dogma.
