Daeron Targaryen becomes one of the most important figures in the struggle for Tumbleton during Season 3, yet he disappears before the conflict is resolved. His absence leaves a significant question for the next season: did Daeron survive, and if not, how will the series show his death?
Daeron’s position in Season 3
Benjamin Evan Ainsworth’s Daeron is presented as a young prince with limited control over the political and military crisis around him. His uncle, Ormund Hightower, keeps him under close control while promoting his own vision for Westeros.
Ormund is a committed follower of the Faith of the Seven and distrusts dragons. He orders Daeron to restrain and conceal Tessarion, treating the creatures as dangerous remnants of an older, less civilised age. Even the threat of several opposing dragons does not change Ormund’s belief that careful tactics can overcome overwhelming force.
Ormund also encourages Daeron to accept a crown, although his apparent support hides a plan to govern through his nephew. His temper and need for control make him an intimidating presence, and Daeron repeatedly hesitates to challenge decisions that appear irrational or reckless.
Why Daeron vanishes after Tumbleton
Daeron’s last major appearance comes as the battle develops. When his uncle Gwayne Hightower approaches him in an attempt to negotiate peace, Daeron appears to be releasing Tessarion. The Season 3 finale then leaves his fate unresolved rather than showing a clear death.
The books provide a possible framework for what comes next, but the television adaptation has already changed several character motivations. In Fire & Blood, Tumbleton’s aftermath causes serious divisions within the Green camp. Ulf the White and Hugh the Hammer demand rewards for their role in the fighting and begin seeking greater power. Together, they become known as the Betrayers.
Could the Betrayers turn against Daeron?
The series has not portrayed Ulf and Hugh in exactly the same way. Ulf is mainly interested in drinking and spending time with his companions, while Hugh’s priorities centre on his family. Their established characterisation makes an immediate joint bid for the throne seem less likely.
That does not rule out a confrontation. The pair could make demands of Daeron that have nothing to do with royal power, forcing the prince to consider killing them. In the book, Daeron throws wine in Hugh’s face during an argument. The show’s calmer version of Daeron may not repeat that action, but another character, such as Daemon, could recreate the conflict—particularly with Ulf, whose drinking is a recurring trait.
What happens to Daeron in the source material?
The written version presents Daeron as considerably more aggressive. He kills a character in retaliation for the death of a relative who has not appeared in the television series. That act helps explain the title “Daeron the Daring”. In the adaptation, Ormund gives him the nickname without Daeron yet having performed an equivalent feat.
Most accounts agree that Daeron dies during the second battle of Tumbleton, although the precise cause remains disputed. The series could choose one of the existing theories, combine several possibilities or create a new explanation.
Will Daeron survive Season 4?
There is no confirmed answer within the Season 3 ending. However, the unresolved battle, the growing hostility between Daeron and the Betrayers, and the fate assigned to him in Fire & Blood all point towards a dangerous future.
Season 4 may therefore use Daeron’s disappearance as the starting point for a final confrontation rather than treating it as proof of survival. Whatever version the show selects, Daeron is unlikely to remain in the story for much longer.
