Doctor Strange confronts a waking nightmare
Marvel’s Sorcerer Supreme is heading into another strange chapter with Doctor Strange: Endless Nightmare, a new graphic novel from Abrams ComicArts’ Marvel Arts line. The story sends Stephen Strange into the Nightmare Realm after an unexplained wave of insomnia affects the world.
The book’s central mystery begins with a hospital patient who warns of a “slumbering god”. If the entity wakes, he claims, the entire multiverse could be destroyed. Strange must investigate the warning and find a way to stop a nightmare that has crossed into waking life.
That premise gives the graphic novel a distinctly supernatural direction, mixing dream logic with a threat to reality. The preview pages below introduce the hospital sequence before the wider chaos begins.
A creative team with Dune experience
Doctor Strange: Endless Nightmare is written by Kevin J. Anderson, with artwork by Raúl Allén and Patricia Martín. Anderson, Allén and Martín previously collaborated with Brian Herbert on Abrams’ graphic-novel adaptations of Dune.
The Marvel Arts imprint is curated by cover artist Alex Ross. Ross also recently released his graphic novel Marvel Dimensions, and he praised the artists’ ability to create a richly realised New York while comparing their approach to Winsor McCay’s Little Nemo in Slumberland.
“The character of Doctor Strange has access to so many bizarre realms, I wanted to introduce him to a dark and twisted Lovecraft-inspired story,” Kevin J. Anderson said in a statement.
Anderson also said the story features a significant and popular Doctor Strange villain, alongside another villain who has not appeared since Stan Lee and Steve Ditko introduced him in Dr. Strange #122 in 1964.
Release details and Avengers: Doomsday connection
Doctor Strange’s possible return to the screen in Avengers: Doomsday remains uncertain. His next confirmed appearance is in Doctor Strange: Endless Nightmare, which is scheduled for hardcover release on 8 September for $25.99.
