DLSS 5 may trade frame rate for AI-enhanced visuals
Nvidia’s next-generation Deep Learning Super Sampling technology is facing growing criticism. Early demonstrations have raised concerns about unnatural, AI-generated imagery, while new reporting indicates that DLSS 5 may reduce game performance by 50–60 per cent.

That reported performance cost is particularly striking because DLSS has traditionally been used to increase frame rates. Nvidia’s technology renders games at a lower internal resolution and uses machine learning to produce a sharper final image. DLSS 5, described as a real-time neural-rendering model, appears to take a very different approach to visual enhancement.
Reporting on the DLSS 5 performance hit followed a demonstration that left observers unconvinced. Nvidia reportedly said the 50–60 per cent reduction would apply regardless of the game, although developers may be able to make the results look less unpleasant through additional tuning.

Why DLSS 5 has become so controversial
The backlash is not only about frame rates. Because DLSS 5 relies on real-time neural rendering, it raises concerns associated with generative AI, including its environmental cost and the possibility of overriding an artist’s original decisions.
Early footage showed character models with distorted or exaggerated features. Depending on the scene, faces could appear unnaturally polished or deeply unsettling. Critics argue that an algorithmic makeover can weaken the intended visual style of a game rather than simply improving image clarity.
Some players have already experimented with the technology outside its intended context. DLSS 5 has not officially launched, but files from an early-access version of NBA 2K27 were reportedly extracted and used with other games. Results varied: some experiments looked better than Nvidia’s demonstration featuring Resident Evil Requiem, while others produced even stranger images.
Examples involving games with an anime aesthetic highlighted how poorly the effect can suit certain art styles. The technology was not designed or tested for many of those unofficial experiments, but the results have still shaped the wider conversation.

Nvidia’s wider gaming problem
The DLSS 5 reaction arrives as Nvidia faces broader criticism from players. The company has benefited enormously from the generative-AI boom, and some existing customers believe that focus has come at the expense of conventional gaming products.
Recent graphics-card releases have also been described as underwhelming by critics. A feature that potentially halves frame rates is therefore unlikely to persuade sceptical PC players, particularly when the visual improvement is inconsistent or changes the look that developers intended.
DLSS 5 is scheduled to launch alongside NBA 2K27 on 3 September. Until wider testing is possible, questions remain about how the technology will perform in supported games and whether its visual benefits can justify such a substantial cost.

What this means for arcade and PC gaming
