Wonder Man arrived on Disney+ earlier this year as an unusually light and self-aware change of pace for Marvel’s streaming output. Only two months after its premiere, Marvel announced that the series would return for a second season. That renewal has now been reversed.
The second season’s writers’ room never formally began, and the people attached to the project have reportedly been freed to pursue other work. The cancellation was broken by Variety. A source also indicated that the central characters may still appear as cameos in future Marvel productions.
What Wonder Man was about
The series featured Yahya Abdul-Mateen II as Simon Williams and Ben Kingsley as Trevor Slattery. The unlikely pair joined forces in an attempt to establish themselves in Hollywood, with their work eventually connected to a remake of the in-universe superhero film Wonder Man.
Simon’s situation supplied the show’s central comic tension: he possesses superhuman abilities, yet lives in a world where superheroes are not permitted to perform as themselves on screen. The result was a satire of filmmaking, celebrity and the entertainment business.
Why was season 2 cancelled?
Disney has not clearly explained what changed between the renewal announcement in March and the cancellation. During that period, Josh D’Amaro became Disney’s new chief executive. He has already introduced multiple rounds of mass layoffs this year.
Disney+ has expanded considerably, but the service has still struggled to catch up with major competitors including Netflix and YouTube TV. Those wider business pressures may provide context, although no specific reason for ending Wonder Man has been confirmed.
Critical success, limited audience
Wonder Man earned a 91 percent positive rating from critics, while Yahya Abdul-Mateen II received an Emmy nomination for lead actor in a comedy series. The programme apparently did not attract a mass audience on Disney+, but its strong critical response seemed sufficient to earn a second-season order.
That made the reversal particularly unexpected, especially when Marvel series such as Hawkeye and Moon Knight concluded after a single season. For viewers who missed it, the first season remains available to catch up on Disney+.
