Discord says it has not yet received a subpoena from Take-Two over the spread of Grand Theft Auto 6 leaks. If one arrives, the platform says it will first assess whether the request is valid and how broadly it reaches.
Take-Two, Rockstar Games’ parent company, filed petitions seeking records from Microsoft and Discord on August 20. A federal court approved those requests the following day, prompting concern among some users about the apparent breadth of the information being sought.
Discord marketing director Ryan Rigney wrote on X on August 24 that Discord had not been served. He added that the company would “evaluate the validity and scope” of any subpoena before responding.
Rigney was responding to a widely shared post raising concerns that Take-Two might be seeking information about users well beyond anyone apparently connected to the original breach. It remains unclear whether the requests reflect specific, actionable leads or a wider attempt to identify the source of new GTA 6 leaks appearing online.
What information does the request seek?
The court filings describe requests for registration details, last-login IP addresses, phone numbers and linked accounts or connections, including Google and Xbox. The records appear to cover potentially thousands of users across the discord.gg/odyssey and discord.gg/darkviperau servers.
The petitions identified September 4 as a possible response deadline for Microsoft and Discord. Microsoft has already indicated that it is willing to assist Take-Two and Rockstar Games.

Microsoft is cooperating, while Discord weighs its position
Xbox chief technology officer Scott Van Vliet wrote last week that Microsoft was working closely with Take-Two and Rockstar to protect creative works and intellectual property.
GTA 6 is expected to be one of the biggest releases ever for Xbox Series X/S, giving Microsoft a strong commercial reason to maintain its relationship with Take-Two and its subsidiaries. Discord faces a different responsibility: its role as a communications platform includes protecting members’ personal data from unnecessary disclosure.
Discord’s popularity among players has made it a common location for game leaks, and publishers have frequently sought information from the service. The company has sometimes challenged requests it considers too broad. During a legal dispute with Nexon, one of Discord’s lawyers argued that the platform was required to meet its legal obligations, but was not a publisher’s copyright-enforcement partner in a July 2024 legal fight.
Discord has also removed servers associated with alleged video-game piracy, including communities focused on Switch emulators, and has become involved in cases involving court injunctions. Co-founder Jason Citron said in 2024 that the company receives DMCA requests, sometimes receives court orders and maintains processes for responding to both those demands and law-enforcement requests.
