Diablo 5 is officially in development, with Blizzard Entertainment confirming the next mainline entry in its long-running action RPG series during the BlizzCon 2026 opening ceremony.
The announcement also revealed a planned spring 2029 release window. The sequel will bring back the original Diablo, the Lord of Terror who first threatened Sanctuary in 1997.
What Blizzard has revealed about Diablo 5
A brief teaser introduced the game with a grim image: Diablo’s forces slaughtering a horde of angels. It sets the tone for a chapter built around a world that has already been defeated rather than one still waiting for its final battle.
The story takes place approximately 100 years after Diablo 4. Following Mephisto’s defeat in that game, Sanctuary has fallen and Diablo has decisively won the conflict between good and evil. Players will explore a post-apocalyptic setting and face a central question: what do you become when the world has already collapsed?
Blizzard planned to share more information during the Diablo 5: Forging the Next Era panel on 12 September at 1:45 p.m. PT. The session is set to offer an early look at the setting, character classes and the creative direction for the next era of the series.

How the release fits Diablo’s history
If the spring 2029 target holds, the fifth mainline game will arrive around six years after Diablo 4. That game was announced at BlizzCon 2019 before launching in June 2023.
Since then, Blizzard has released two expansions: Vessel of Hatred in October 2024 and Lord of Hatred in April 2026. Blizzard also announced a new playable Amazon class for Diablo 4 at BlizzCon 2026. The Amazon previously appeared in Diablo 2.
The proposed timetable would be notably quicker than the gaps between earlier entries. The first Diablo launched in January 1997, followed by Diablo 2 in June 2000. Blizzard then took more than a decade to release Diablo 3 in 2012, followed by another 11 years before Diablo 4 arrived.
Expansions and new classes helped maintain the series between those major releases, but Diablo 5 suggests Blizzard may now be pursuing a faster pace for new instalments.
Platforms remain unconfirmed
Blizzard has not announced which platforms will support Diablo 5. For comparison, Diablo 4 was developed for consoles and PC at the same time and released on PlayStation 4, PlayStation 5, Windows PC, Xbox One and Xbox Series X.
Diablo 4 is also planned for Nintendo Switch 2 in a package called Diablo 4: The Age of Hatred Collection, which includes the base game and both expansions. Until Blizzard confirms otherwise, those details do not establish the platforms for the next sequel.
