Diablo 4 will not receive any more major expansions after its two post-launch releases. With Diablo 5 scheduled for spring 2029, Blizzard is shifting its attention to seasonal stories that will carry the current action RPG towards its sequel.
Game director Brent Gibson told PC Gamer at BlizzCon 2026 that the team is concentrating on Diablo 4 seasons while preparing for the next game. Blizzard considers the story surrounding Hatred complete, with Lord of Hatred providing a conclusion involving Mephisto.
That does not mean Diablo 4 is finished. Seasonal updates will continue, now helping Blizzard develop the transition into the franchise’s next major storyline: the Story of Terror.
Diablo 5 leaves room for more seasonal storytelling
Diablo 5 will thrust Sanctuary into an end-times scenario, but its events occur 100 years after the period covered by Diablo 4. That substantial time gap gives Blizzard room to explore additional developments before the sequel arrives.
Gibson said the precise direction between the two games has not been fully mapped out. Blizzard wants to watch how players respond to each season before deciding which story threads should continue. That approach leaves continuity open while the studio builds towards the next chapter.

Annual expansions had previously been discussed
The decision marks a change from expectations set around Diablo 4’s live-service plans. When the game launched in 2023, former franchise boss Rod Ferguson described quarterly seasons and annual expansions as key parts of the long-term support strategy.
That earlier plan led some players to expect substantial expansion releases every year. Blizzard has now confirmed that the two existing major expansions represent the full expansion programme for Diablo 4, even though seasonal content will continue.

Diablo 4 support is expected to continue
There is no indication that Diablo 4 will immediately be abandoned when Diablo 5 launches. Gibson pointed to Diablo 2: Resurrected as an example of continued support, noting that it recently received a new Warlock class.
However, Blizzard is unlikely to maintain two games with equally extensive seasonal programmes indefinitely. For now, Diablo 4 still has planned content ahead, including the Amazon class, which is due to arrive in the first half of 2027.
