Sega Amusements is bringing Daytona Championship USA back into the spotlight with a new motion cabinet. The Daytona Championship USA Motion Edition is scheduled to make its world debut at IAAPA Expo Orlando 2025.
The new release adds a full air-compressor motion platform to Sega’s modern take on its classic stock-car racer. It will be shown alongside a broad selection of video games, redemption products, cranes and merchandisers at Sega Amusements’ booth.
How Daytona Championship USA reached this point
Sega relaunched its famous 1990s racing brand in 2017 with Daytona Championship USA, initially known as Daytona 3. The first version arrived in a Deluxe cabinet featuring a video-screen marquee and a custom engine model beneath the seats.
A Standard cabinet followed in 2018, using a format closer to Sega’s earlier racing machines. There was also an uncommon conversion kit that transformed Sega Showdown cabinets into Daytona Championship USA units. A pair of those machines was once operated by the writer before a second venue was closed.
Neither the Standard nor Deluxe cabinet used a motion base. Sega addressed that in 2019 with a substantial four-player Motion SDLX model. It adapted the design created for Showdown SDLX, including pivoting seats, but appears to have been produced in small numbers. Only selected venues, including Lucky Strike, are known to have received one, and it apparently did not appear at trade shows.
The SDLX and Deluxe versions have since left production, while the Standard model remained the regular option from Sega Amusements. The Motion Edition therefore becomes the fourth cabinet design released for Daytona Championship USA.
What the Motion Edition changes
The new machine uses a complete air-ride motion system rather than the pivot-seat arrangement found on the earlier Super Deluxe model. Sega plans to offer both two-player and four-player configurations, giving operators a more flexible alternative to the SDLX, which was available only as a four-player special-attraction cabinet.
The cabinet includes race-car styling, chrome details, a chequered-flag header and lighting that reflects the colours of the iconic Hornet. Its motion hardware is based on the Deluxe Motion design developed by 3MindWave and Sega Amusements for Apex Rebels.
There are some differences from that earlier platform. The Daytona cabinet does not use a micro-LED video marquee and has a slightly smaller 49-inch screen. The same cabinet approach has also been used for the rare motion edition of Bandai Namco’s Dead Heat Unleashed, which has been promoted in China and the Middle East since appearing the previous year.
New Season Edition software
The Motion Edition is expected to ship with the New Season Edition of the game. Introduced in 2019, that software update revised the original release with improved handling and upgraded graphics.
The available information does not indicate that the new cabinet adds another circuit or other major gameplay content. However, because the updated software was not available at every venue, the New Season Edition may still be unfamiliar to many players.
Other Sega products at IAAPA 2025
Sega Amusements’ booth 1006 at the Orange County Convention Center in Orlando is scheduled to host the Daytona motion cabinet from 18–21 November. The company’s IAAPA 2025 press release also lists the following attractions and products:
- Maimai DX, a rhythm game with more than 6,000 units sold, over 1,100 songs, online connectivity, global leaderboards, Aime card support and annual music updates.
- Apex Rebels STD, a smaller version of the racer.
- Hypercross Motion Single Player, a compact one-player snowmobile racing cabinet.
- Subsoccer Arcade, a seated football game built around fast 90-second matches.
- The Allstars range, including Ultimate Disc, Air Hockey and Allstars Basketball, the latter using a 65-inch screen.
- Putt It! Par-Tee, Simon Arcade and Mini Cube Prize World.
The booth will also feature Sega’s cranes and merchandisers. A separate EMEA announcement does not list Maimai DX, as the game is not available in those territories, but it does mention the video puncher Cyber Boxer.
Why this release matters
Daytona Championship USA has already enjoyed a long run in arcades, yet the Motion Edition gives operators a new cabinet format without abandoning the established game. Its air-ride system, two-player option and four-player configuration broaden the choices available to venues considering a racing arcade.
Continuing proven titles is also becoming a practical part of arcade development as the cost of creating entirely new games rises. Sega is not alone in refreshing established properties with new hardware, while familiar music and presentation can still help a machine stand out in a busy venue.
