David Tennant will return as the Tenth Doctor in a new audio drama from Big Finish, giving fans another time-travelling adventure without bringing the character back to television.

Doctor Who — The Tenth Doctor and Rani is a 12-episode audio series scheduled for release in August 2027. Tennant will be joined by Anjli Mohindra, who reprises her role as Rani Chandra rather than appearing alongside familiar companions such as Rose Tyler, Martha Jones or Donna Noble.
Mohindra originally played Rani in The Sarah Jane Adventures, the 2008 spin-off series. Rani worked with Luke Smith, Clyde Langer and the robot dog K9 while helping Sarah Jane Smith defend Earth from alien threats. Sarah Jane also encouraged Rani’s interest in journalism, a path that eventually saw her become one of the world’s leading journalists.
Three historical and contemporary mysteries
The new series brings the Doctor and Rani together through their shared connection to Sarah Jane. Big Finish says their adventures will include an investigation into cryptids in modern-day Cumbria, an interruption on the set of a 1970s science-fiction programme, and a major crisis during the coronation of Elizabeth I.
Those stories place the pair in very different settings, from a present-day British mystery to a television production and a dangerous moment in Tudor history. Further details about the individual episodes have not been provided.
A previous meeting adds another layer
This will not be the Doctor and Rani’s first encounter. Tennant appeared in The Wedding of Sarah Jane Smith, an episode of The Sarah Jane Adventures in which Rani was considerably younger. It remains unclear whether that earlier meeting will affect the new audio stories.
