Dave Bautista is reportedly in early negotiations to play Kratos in Amazon’s God of War television adaptation, following Ryan Hurst’s departure from the role.
Hurst, who appears as Mentor in Christopher Nolan’s The Odyssey, had filmed four episodes before a bicep injury prevented him from continuing as the formidable Spartan warrior. Production was subsequently paused, with filming expected to resume in mid-October.
Deadline reports that Bautista is now discussing the part with Amazon. There has been no official casting announcement, so the negotiations may not result in a completed deal.
A major recast for Amazon’s God of War
If Bautista joins the series, he would need to reshoot the four episodes already completed by Hurst as well as appear in the episodes that have not yet been filmed. The production change could make Kratos one of the most closely watched roles in the adaptation.
Bautista would perform opposite Callum Vinson, the child actor known for Chucky, who plays Atreus during the first season. Amazon plans to age up Kratos’ son in later seasons, meaning Vinson will not continue in the role and another actor will take over.
The same approach applies to Island Austin, who plays Thrud, the younger daughter of Thor. Austin is also expected to be replaced for the second season as the character ages.
Why Bautista fits the role
The former professional wrestler already has the physical presence associated with Kratos, so he would not need a separate period to build the character’s imposing physique. His acting career also includes several high-profile genre roles.
Audiences may recognise Bautista as Drax the Destroyer from Guardians of the Galaxy and the wider Marvel Cinematic Universe. His other notable performances include the villain Glossu in Dune, Duke Cody in Glass Onion, and the voice of the ancient air nomad Tagah in Avatar Aang: The Last Airbender.
