Dave Bautista is officially taking over as Kratos in Amazon’s live-action God of War series. The recasting follows a serious injury that halted production and forced the ambitious Prime Video adaptation to redo much of its filmed material.
The former WWE performer and Guardians of the Galaxy actor has reportedly finalised a deal to lead the series, replacing Ryan Hurst. Variety’s report confirms the change after weeks of speculation about Bautista’s involvement.
Why the series has recast Kratos
Hurst was announced as Kratos in January, but suffered a torn bicep during a stunt in late June. The injury required surgery and a lengthy recovery. Rather than pause filming until 2027, Amazon MGM Studios and Sony Pictures Television chose to recast the central role.
Production had already been running in Vancouver for several months, and multiple episodes were reportedly complete. Those scenes are now expected to be filmed again with Bautista, with the production aiming to resume in mid-October.

What the first season will cover
Season 1 will adapt the 2018 God of War game. Its story follows Kratos and his son Atreus as they journey to scatter the ashes of Kratos’ late wife, Faye.
The casting changes may continue beyond Kratos. For Season 2, which is expected to adapt God of War Ragnarök and its time jump, Prime Video is reportedly looking for older performers to play Atreus and Thrud. Callum Vinson and Island Austin remain attached to portray the younger versions of those characters in Season 1.
Premiere timing remains uncertain
The series does not yet have an official premiere date. With production preparing to restart after the recast, a 2027 release now appears increasingly difficult, while 2028 looks more realistic.
More God of War projects are on the way
The franchise itself continues to expand. God of War Laufey, a new PlayStation 5 game focused on Faye rather than Kratos, is scheduled for 16 February 2027.
Santa Monica Studio has also confirmed that another new game starring Kratos is in development. A remake of the original Greek trilogy is likewise in the works, giving fans several different parts of the franchise to watch while the television adaptation is rebuilt.
