Disney’s planned return to Darkwing Duck has moved from long-running rumour to an officially greenlit animated series. Mark Hamill, Seth Rogen, Lizzy Caplan and Lilimar are attached to the project, although Disney has not announced a release timeline for Disney+.
The revival has reportedly been discussed since 2020. Hamill will voice the masked hero, while Rogen will play Launchpad McQuack, Darkwing’s accident-prone pilot partner. Caplan is set to voice Gosalyn Mallard, Darkwing’s adoptive daughter, and Lilimar will play Duckie, a new character central to the story.
Disney’s synopsis describes a story that begins after Darkwing spends 35 years trapped in an alternate reality where nobody knows about his heroic exploits. His world changes when Duckie, a rebellious teenager familiar with his past, arrives and pulls the self-absorbed vigilante back into action.
“For the last 35 years, Darkwing Duck has been trapped in his worst nightmare: an alternate world that’s never heard of his superhero exploits. Now a rebellious teen named Duckie who knows all about his heroic past shows up to pull this ego-fueled vigilante back into battle. Together, this unlikely duo will get dangerous to fight old enemies like Negaduck and Megavolt and reunite with allies Launchpad, Gosalyn and Morgana to save the entire universe.”
The announced cast and story details were reported by The Hollywood Reporter. The plot also confirms the return of familiar allies and villains, including Morgana, Negaduck and Megavolt.
For anyone discovering the character today, Darkwing Duck was a superhero parody shaped by the same broad cartoon world as DuckTales, with Batman-style theatrics filtered through slapstick and duck-based wordplay. Its opening remains especially memorable; you can revisit one of the best intro theme songs from that era.
The announcement may also interest collectors who enjoy turning animated favourites into part of a home games room. RETROCADE’s Arcade Blog covers related arcade and gaming news, while the Arcade Machine Buying Guide is a useful starting point for choosing a cabinet. Smaller rooms may suit compact bartop arcades, and hands-on builders can explore DIY arcade kits.
It remains to be seen whether Hamill will echo Jim Cummings’ established interpretation of Darkwing or take the role in a completely different direction. Hamill’s long experience with distinctive character voices makes that one of the revival’s most interesting unanswered questions.
