Darkwing Duck is returning for a new animated series

Disney is bringing back Drake Mallard, better known as Darkwing Duck, in a new series for Disney Plus. The announcement marks the character’s return to a starring role after 35 years away from his original television series.

The revival will reunite Darkwing with several familiar faces, including Launchpad McQuack, Gosalyn Mallard and Morgana. His old enemies Negaduck and Megavolt are also set to return, with the new adventure expanding the danger to the entire universe.

A new partner and an alternate world

Disney’s setup places Darkwing in an alternate reality where nobody knows about his superhero career. He has been stuck there for 35 years, until a rebellious teenager named Duckie arrives with knowledge of his heroic past and pulls him back into action.

Duckie and Darkwing will face Negaduck and Megavolt while reconnecting with Launchpad, Gosalyn and Morgana in a fight to save the universe.

Mark Hamill will lead the voice cast as Drake Mallard and Darkwing Duck. Seth Rogen voices Launchpad McQuack, Lizzy Caplan plays Gosalyn Mallard, and Lilimar plays Duckie.

Dan Stevens, Tiffany Shepis, Kathryn Newton, Teo Briones, Tyler Dean Flores, Katie Rich and Nat Faxon are also part of the cast. Tad Stones, who created Darkwing Duck, consulted on the production. Stones said he was excited to see the character “getting dangerous again” in a new series, sharing the enthusiasm of fans of the original.

Darkwing Duck’s television and gaming history

The original Darkwing Duck premiered in 1991 and ran for 91 episodes across Disney Channel, ABC and syndication. The character later appeared in Disney comics, as well as games for NES and Game Boy. Jim Cummings originally provided Darkwing’s voice, while Chris Diamantopoulos took over the role for the 2017 revival of DuckTales.

Darkwing had already returned to television in Disney’s 2017 DuckTales reboot. The new project gives him another opportunity to lead a series of his own. The original show is currently streaming on Disney Plus.
