IAAPA Expo 2025 will introduce a compact new attraction concept from Dark Escape Games: two self-contained, five-minute escape experiences designed for an arcade-sized footprint. Clown Around and Pyramid Scheme will appear at the AVS Companies booth, #1918, in the Games & Arcade Pavilion.

The company is a new venture combining the creative work of an art studio with the manufacturing experience of a business that has produced custom billiard-table lighting for around 15 years. Sean Tyler says his art studio has developed occasional projects for approximately 20 years, while Dark Escape Games has spent the past 12 months developing, prototyping and market-testing its first two attractions.

For operators comparing unusual attractions with more conventional arcade machines, these cabinets occupy a similar amount of space to larger environmental games such as Jurassic Park, House of the Dead Scarlet Dawn and Dark Escape 4D.

How the compact escape games work

Both attractions use the familiar objective of an escape room, but their puzzles, physical props and presentation have been adapted for the shorter sessions and higher throughput expected in an amusement venue. Players can leave at any time by pressing the EXIT/END GAME button inside the cabinet. Without using it, a game runs for roughly five minutes.

The experiences are also built to engage multiple senses while the player is inside. Each scenario has one correct solution, and Dark Escape Games plans to release a new expansion scenario for each cabinet annually. Owners will be able to replace the puzzles and props with a new adventure in approximately two to three hours.

Clown Around

Clown Around begins with a radio report about a gruesome incident at a local circus. Authorities suspect one of the famous clowns, but do not know which one is responsible. Players must examine the evidence, identify the victims and determine the killer’s identity. The outcome does not prevent the finale: the killer appears in a traditional jump scare whether the player succeeds or fails.

The game was also nominated for an IAAPA Brass Ring Award. Its sinister circus setting may appeal to visitors who enjoy the dark carnival atmosphere associated with games such as CarnEvil.

Pyramid Scheme

In Pyramid Scheme, players enter the tomb of an ancient pharaoh who is preparing to rise and spread darkness across the land. To stop him, they must interpret hieroglyphs, solve the puzzles and return the pharaoh’s vital organs to the correct sacred jars.

Success is not the only possible ending. Whether players complete the task or not, the mummy comes to life at the conclusion and delivers a threatening response.

Designed for unattended operation

Dark Escape Games says its cabinets were developed with challenging venue conditions in mind, including locations that serve alcohol. Props and puzzles are bolted through or secured with aircraft cable and similar measures. Replacement parts and props use a plug-and-play approach if damage does occur.

A 10-week trial of Clown Around at a major family entertainment centre reportedly ended without damage or theft. Operators can adjust the internal and external audio volume, but cannot alter settings such as game duration or difficulty because those variables are tied to the puzzles and game flow.

A new direction for arcade attractions

These two cabinets sit between an arcade game and a miniature haunted attraction, offering a structured, physical experience in a footprint intended for commercial amusement venues. Their annual scenario updates could also give operators a way to refresh the content without replacing the complete cabinet.

For Australian operators and home arcade owners researching different cabinet formats, RETROCADE’s arcade machine buying guide covers the practical considerations involved in choosing a machine. Those looking for a more compact footprint can also compare bartop arcade options, while ongoing venue maintenance is covered in the arcade repairs service section.

Dark Escape Games will present Clown Around and Pyramid Scheme at AVS Companies’ booth #1918. Because the company is exhibiting within that booth, visitors should not expect to find the attractions listed as a separate location on the IAAPA map.
