Danganronpa 2: Goodbye Despair first launched in Japan for PlayStation Portable in 2012. The second entry in the horror visual-novel series reached North America two years later through its PlayStation Vita release. Now, more than a decade on, it is being revisited as Danganronpa 2×2, a modern-platform “retelling” with surprisingly demanding recommended PC hardware.

The remake was originally planned for this autumn before developer and publisher Spike Chunsoft delayed it to January 14, 2027. Despite the new release date, the studio has already published the PC system requirements. The minimum specification calls for 8GB of RAM, while the recommended setup lists an Nvidia GeForce RTX 4070 graphics card and 32GB of memory.

That gap has left fans trying to work out why a largely narrative-driven game would need hardware associated with much more technically demanding software. One player joked that 32GB of RAM should at least result in Nagito appearing on screen to deliver a kiss.

Another reaction questioned the RTX 4070 recommendation, noting that the visible polygon count appeared extremely low and suggesting the game looked capable of running at 60 frames per second on the original PS Vita.

Why the requirements seem so unusual

Footage released so far does not appear to explain the recommended memory allocation. Danganronpa 2×2 primarily presents cutout-style characters against static backgrounds while dialogue and story information appear on screen. There is no obvious open-world environment or simulation-heavy system in the material shown to date.

That leaves several possibilities: the remake may contain substantial unseen content, or its PC version may need significant optimisation before launch. For readers comparing hardware for a home setup, it is a useful reminder that listed requirements do not always reflect a game’s apparent visual complexity. RETROCADE’s arcade machine buying guide offers a separate starting point for planning dedicated gaming hardware.

RAM prices make the timing worse

The announcement has also landed during a sharp rise in memory pricing. When Danganronpa 2×2 was first revealed, 32GB of DDR5-5600 RAM could be purchased for less than $250. The same capacity now costs closer to $1,250, making the recommended specification particularly eye-catching.

There is still time for Spike Chunsoft to revise the requirement. Earlier this year, TT Games reduced Lego Batman: Legacy of the Dark Knight‘s recommended memory from 32GB to 16GB before release. A similar change would make this remake easier to justify, although 16GB would still sound substantial for a visual novel without destructible, object-filled environments.

By the time Danganronpa 2×2 arrives, the central mystery may not be limited to which character dies. Players may also want to know why a game built around dialogue, static scenes and stylised characters needs such a powerful PC.
