Danganronpa 2×2 has been moved out of its planned release window, with the team acknowledging that Grand Theft Auto 6 influenced the decision. The remake is now scheduled for early 2027.
With Rockstar’s open-world blockbuster due on 19 November 2026, several games have been shifted away from the crowded November period. In an interview with Crunchyroll, writer and series creator Kazuta Kodaka said the team wanted to avoid launching alongside an upcoming AAA or “AAAA” release.
The change also gives the developers more time to work on the game. Kodaka offered a particularly candid explanation: he would not have enough time to develop Danganronpa 2×2 while playing Grand Theft Auto 6. For a release expected to attract enormous attention, avoiding direct competition is a practical move—and one that reflects how keen even game creators are to experience Rockstar’s next major title.
What is changing in Danganronpa 2×2?
Danganronpa 2×2 is a remake of Danganronpa 2: Goodbye Despair, the 2012 second instalment in the cult murder-mystery visual novel series. It is designed to refresh the original experience with visual improvements, quality-of-life updates and a substantially redesigned game map that moves from 2D into 3D.
The remake’s biggest addition is Slayhem Mode, a new story route presenting an entirely different narrative. Producer Shohei Sakakibara has said this mode will offer approximately 35 hours of gameplay, compared with around 30 hours for the original scenario.
