Damon Lindelof Says Lanterns Will Not Repeat Lost’s Biggest Mistake

Damon Lindelof is taking a more structured approach to Lanterns

Damon Lindelof helped reshape television in 2004 as co-creator and co-showrunner of Lost, the ABC science-fiction drama about the survivors of Oceanic Airlines Flight 815. Across six seasons, the series built its audience around the mysteries of the island and the promise of eventual answers.

That approach also created frustration. Viewers received clues gradually, while the show’s final season left some fans dissatisfied. Lindelof says the experience taught him an important lesson that has influenced his latest science-fiction project.

Why Lanterns will tell a complete story

Lindelof is a co-creator of Lanterns, a DC Universe series described as a science-fiction Western and buddy-cop story. It follows veteran Green Lantern Hal Jordan, played by Kyle Chandler, as he trains his potential successor, John Stewart, played by Aaron Pierre.

Speaking at a press conference before the series premiere, Lindelof identified the pressure to extend Lost for as long as possible as its central problem. He said the creative team had pushed for an end date from the show’s premiere, because resolving its mysteries would naturally move the story towards its conclusion.

“For a show that had a mystery engine, the audience was saying ‘When are you going to tell us what the f*ck is going on here?’” Lindelof said.

He adopted a different model for Watchmen, his nine-episode HBO limited series from 2019. Although that story covered several decades and served as a sequel to Alan Moore and Dave Gibbons’ influential comic, its major mysteries and character arcs were resolved within the season.

Lanterns aims to combine those two approaches. Co-creator and showrunner Chris Mundy wanted to deliver a satisfying story while leaving viewers eager to return to the world.

“We want the audience to be really hungry for more when it ends,” Lindelof said. “I think that it feels like it was a really good meal, but a couple of hours after you’ve consumed it, you’re going to say, ‘I think I want to spend some more time in that world.’”

The relationship matters more than the mythology

Lindelof believes the most effective parts of Lost were its character journeys rather than its science-fiction concepts. That principle is also guiding the Lanterns writers’ room.

While the series uses familiar buddy-cop contrasts, Hal is presented as a confident veteran and John as the more disciplined younger officer. Lindelof has also described their connection as a love story built around mutual respect.

The pair’s dynamic draws on family drama as well. Lindelof compared them more closely to brothers than father and son, with both men working through complicated relationships with their own fathers as they learn to operate together.

“It’s all about the characters and their humanity,” Lindelof said, arguing that conversations focused only on rings, planets and aliens would miss the point. The key questions are who Hal and John are, where they came from, and what each of them wants.

An eight-episode mystery in Nebraska

Across eight episodes, Lanterns will develop the partnership between Hal and John while investigating a mystery connected to a mass shooting in Rushville, Nebraska. The case also brings them into contact with dangerous extraterrestrials.

HBO has not officially approved a second season. John Stewart is, however, set to appear in James Gunn’s Man of Tomorrow film in 2027.

The first episode of Lanterns is available to stream on HBO Max, with subsequent episodes scheduled for Sundays through October 4.
