Cyberpunk 2077 is heading towards a live-action film adaptation, with Paramount developing a feature based on CD Projekt Red’s futuristic role-playing game.
Reports from Deadline and Variety published on 8 October say the project remains at a very early stage. Lorenzo di Bonaventura, the producer associated with the Transformers films, is attached to the production, while CD Projekt Red will also help produce it.
There is currently no information about the film’s plot, cast, screenwriter or director. That leaves open whether the adaptation will retell elements of the game’s story or introduce a new narrative set in its neon-lit dystopian world.
CD Projekt Red joint CEO Michał Nowakowski described Paramount as a prospective partner that shares the company’s creative ambitions for the franchise. He added that further details would be released when the time is appropriate in a social media statement.
Why Cyberpunk 2077 is a major film property
The game overcame its troubled 2020 launch to become a major success for CD Projekt Red. Ongoing free updates and the substantial paid expansion Phantom Liberty, released in 2023, helped extend its lifespan and reputation.
The first-person, open-world science-fiction RPG features Keanu Reeves as Johnny Silverhand and has sold more than 40 million copies worldwide. CD Projekt Red is also working on a sequel, giving the wider franchise several projects in development.
For readers following the business side of gaming, the announcement is another example of a successful interactive property moving into film and television. Adaptations such as Fallout, The Last of Us, Sonic, Minecraft and Super Mario have helped challenge the long-held assumption that game adaptations are destined to fail. A film or television project based on Arc Raiders is also reportedly in the works.
Paramount’s changing corporate backdrop
The film news follows Paramount’s merger with Warner Bros., creating the new Skydance company. David Ellison leads the combined business, and former Activision chief executive Bobby Kotick has recently joined its board.
