Fans of sprawling fantasy, shifting alliances and ruthless political manoeuvring may find a compelling next watch in Critical Role. It is not a television drama, but its long-form storytelling delivers many of the high-stakes conflicts that made Game of Thrones, A Knight of the Seven Kingdoms and House of the Dragon so involving.
Few fantasy productions match the scale, cast and detailed worldbuilding of George R.R. Martin’s adaptations. Series such as The Wheel of Time and The Witcher come close in places, yet Critical Role offers a different route to complex characters, dangerous alliances and unpredictable consequences.
The series is available to watch on YouTube, and its fourth campaign has the potential to run for more than 100 hours. That makes it a substantial commitment, but also a useful choice for viewers seeking a new fantasy world to explore.
What is Critical Role?
Critical Role follows a group of well-known voice actors as they play Dungeons & Dragons around a table. Episodes commonly last four hours or more, with the story developing through improvisation, character decisions and the results of dice rolls rather than a fixed television script.
The main cast and company co-founders are Matthew Mercer, Laura Bailey, Travis Willingham, Ashley Johnson, Marisha Ray, Sam Riegel, Liam O’Brien and Taliesin Jaffe. Mercer serves as Dungeon Master for the first three campaigns, which take place in the high-fantasy world of Exandria.
Campaign 4 moves to Aramán and is led by Brennan Lee Mulligan, known for Dimension 20. Luis Carazo, Alexander Ward, Whitney Moore, Robbie Daymond and Aabria Iyengar have joined the established cast for this campaign.
What happens in Campaign 4?
Aramán is recovering from the Shapers’ War, a conflict in which mortals killed the oppressive gods who had ruled them. Removing that divine power did not create peace. Magic has weakened, and only selected groups, including the Druids of the Old Path, can still reach the afterlife.
The war also damaged and transformed important regions, including the ancestral lands associated with the Shapers’ followers, House Tachonis and Halovar. Those areas became wastelands, while the presence of countless souls in purgatory helped unleash an undead threat.
With the old order gone, Aramán faces a major power vacuum. The Revolutionary Council in Dol-Makjar attempts to preserve stability, but practical influence belongs to the Sundered Houses: five magical noble families that once formed part of the Obridimian Empire before its collapse.
Each house uses a different blend of religion, magic and military strength to win control. Opposing them is a 13-player group of revolutionaries who want to dismantle the houses and give Aramán’s people the freedom to decide how they will live.
Why it may appeal to Game of Thrones fans
The two stories use different formats, but both present fantasy worlds where power is unstable and moral victories are far from guaranteed. Westeros contains dragons, prophetic visions, face-changing and skin-changing, while magic in Campaign 4 is tied closely to the struggle for authority.
Viewers who enjoyed watching rival factions fight for the Iron Throne may connect with Campaign 4’s revolutionaries. They are not trying to claim a crown, but they are prepared to use espionage, deception and violence against the Sundered Houses.
Death is another important connection. The danger surrounding major characters is a defining feature of Game of Thrones, particularly after the Red Wedding killed several significant figures in the third season. In an actual-play campaign, dice can produce similarly abrupt turns, making character survival uncertain from one encounter to the next.
Mulligan’s homebrewed rules make the threat even more severe. Resurrection magic is unavailable, and Campaign 4 has already lost one player character. Further deaths remain a genuine possibility as the story develops.
A long fantasy series to settle into
Critical Role campaigns typically extend beyond 100 episodes, and Campaign 4 is not yet halfway through that expected journey. By comparison, Game of Thrones delivered just under 80 hours across its television run.
That leaves plenty of room for Campaign 4 to grow into a 100-plus-hour story filled with magic, betrayal, political conflict and difficult choices. It will not replace the original series in format or tone, but its evolving world of Aramán offers a substantial dark-fantasy alternative for fans ready to invest the time.
