Spoilers for Spider-Man: Brand New Day follow.
Spider-Man: Brand New Day arrives five years after Tom Holland’s previous solo Spider-Man film, with the new adventure earning strong critical reactions and passing $1 billion at the global box office.
Holland has also spoken about eventually helping another actor and spider-powered character take over the role. Miles Morales remains the obvious fan favourite for a live-action succession, but the film may quietly point towards another possibility: Cindy Moon, the Marvel Comics hero better known as Silk.
Who is Cindy Moon, also known as Silk?
Peter Parker is far from Marvel’s only spider-themed hero. The wider roster includes Miles Morales, Spider-Gwen, Spider-Woman and Peni Parker, while Cindy Moon joined that group more recently.
Silk first appeared in Marvel Comics in 2014. Cindy is a Korean-American teenager who was bitten by the same radioactive spider as Peter Parker and developed comparable abilities. Her powers include organic webbing produced from her fingertips, unlike Peter’s usual reliance on mechanical web-shooters. Holland’s Spider-Man also uses organic webbing in Brand New Day.
Cindy has appeared as a supporting character in The Amazing Spider-Man and major events including Spider-Geddon, as well as leading her own comic-book series. A planned television project, Silk: Spider Society, was abandoned by Amazon in 2024, after the company passed on moving forward with it.
She is also reportedly attached to the long-developing animated Spider-Women film, should that project eventually proceed. In games, Cindy was teased at the end of Insomniac’s Spider-Man 2, suggesting she could feature in a future entry.
Her Marvel Cinematic Universe history is even more direct. Cindy appeared as one of Peter’s classmates in Spider-Man: Homecoming, played by Tiffany Espensen, who is of Chinese descent. Espensen briefly returned in Avengers: Infinity War and appeared in the extended edition of Spider-Man: No Way Home.
In Brand New Day, a student named Cindy, played by Shannon Young Cho, asks Bruce Banner a question during a class at Empire State University. Peter later approaches Banner for help creating a device designed to suppress the abilities of super-powered people. The student is credited only as “Cindy”, as listed by IMDb, but the character’s repeated MCU appearances have encouraged fans to wonder whether she is secretly Cindy Moon.
The classroom exchange even includes a Reddit-pilled question about Thanos, giving the scene an additional connection to the wider superhero universe.
Could Silk inherit Spider-Man’s place?
Marvel and Sony have not confirmed a fifth solo Spider-Man film. The character is expected to appear next in Avengers: Secret Wars, although a surprise appearance in December’s Avengers: Doomsday has not been ruled out. Beyond those projects, Holland’s future as Peter Parker remains uncertain.
Holland has already discussed helping establish a successor. Speaking to Empire in June, he named possibilities including Miles Morales, Spider-Gwen and Spider-Woman. Holland said he would be happy to help create the next chapter before “swinging off into the sunset”, comparing the idea to Robert Downey Jr.’s role in setting up the next generation.
Miles has received the most attention from fans, but the MCU has done little to establish him beyond introducing his uncle Aaron Davis, played by Donald Glover, in Homecoming. Cindy Moon, by contrast, has been present since that same film.
That does not prove Marvel is preparing Silk as Peter Parker’s replacement. It does, however, give the theory more substance than a completely new character appearing without any prior connection. The idea should still be treated as speculation rather than confirmation.
Holland has since described having “a really clear vision” for passing on the baton, calling the prospect exciting during an appearance on the Happy Sad Confused podcast. Whether that handover leads to Silk, Miles Morales or another spider hero is unknown.
There is also no guarantee that either actor previously cast as Cindy would return as Cindy Moon, or that those MCU classmates are intended to be the same person. Marvel has recast established roles before, replacing Terrence Howard with Don Cheadle as James Rhodes and recasting Scott Lang’s daughter Cassie twice before Kathryn Newton played the superhero Stature.
Marvel Studios president Kevin Feige offered no firm answer about Holland’s long-term plans. He told Variety that Holland’s immediate plan was to rest after a global promotional tour, alongside Zendaya, before taking a deserved victory lap.
A theory worth watching
Cindy Moon’s appearances may ultimately be nothing more than continuity details, or Marvel may be laying groundwork for Silk to become a significant MCU hero. Until the studio confirms a casting decision or project, the strongest conclusion is that Brand New Day has added another intriguing possibility to Spider-Man’s future.
