Spoilers ahead for Carrie (2026).
Mike Flanagan approached Stephen King before developing his eight-episode Carrie series, set in 2026. The showrunner says King reviewed the plans before Flanagan agreed to make the production and helped decide how the story’s world could grow.

The series is now streaming on Prime Video and has prompted debate among King fans because it makes substantial changes to the source material. Flanagan’s explanation is straightforward: several of the most radical departures were supported, and in some cases suggested, by King himself.
“Steve believed very much that the story had already been told as he had written it,” Flanagan said. The appeal, he explained, was the opportunity to broaden the universe around Carrie rather than simply repeat the original story.

The series connects Carrie to King’s wider supernatural universe

The most significant update is the show’s connection to the shared mythology that appears throughout King’s fiction. His books often revisit characters, locations and supernatural rules, but Carrie was his first published novel and originally stood apart from that larger framework.
In the 2026 series, Carrie White, played by Summer Howell, is shown to be one of several women with comparable psychic abilities. One of these women calls the shared power “the Shine”, linking Carrie’s abilities to a familiar part of King’s supernatural vocabulary.
Flanagan believes King might have used that name had he written the novel later in his career. He also points to the book’s suggestion that Carrie is not alone, even though she dies before discovering the wider community connected to her abilities.
Why Carrie survives

Unlike the original story, Carrie survives the events of the new series. The change is designed to support a larger continuing narrative, and Flanagan confirmed that King approved of the decision.
“We all, including Steve, agreed that this version of Carrie deserved to survive the story,” Flanagan said.
Flanagan understands why viewers who value King’s original ending may object. He describes himself as a King purist and says he sympathises with those reactions, while also noting that many viewers have enjoyed the new direction and are curious about its future.
Emaline brings another major departure

The series also introduces Emaline, played by Thalia Dudek. She initially appears to be Carrie’s only friend at school: a solitary figure who encourages Carrie to explore her powers.
The story then suggests that Emaline may not exist outside Carrie’s imagination. Its final twist reveals that she is real and has been guiding Carrie through astral projection from a distance. Emaline eventually appears in person during the final moments of season one.
That character has become one of the most debated additions to the adaptation. Flanagan says King had more input into Emaline than any other new character and was particularly enthusiastic about shaping her role.
The showrunner says these controversial choices were deliberate rather than accidental. In his view, viewers are not protecting King from changes he opposed; they are reacting to ideas he helped develop.
There are still earlier versions of Carrie

Flanagan’s advice to viewers who do not want this expanded interpretation is simple: watch one of the earlier adaptations instead. He says three other versions remain available for audiences who prefer a more familiar approach to the material.
He also praises Brian De Palma’s film, which King likes and Flanagan considers perfect. However, the goal of the 2026 production was never to reproduce that film or recreate the book scene by scene. Its purpose was to explore what else could exist around Carrie’s story.
