Captain Rex makes a surprise appearance in Star Wars Zero Company

Captain Rex is returning to the Star Wars universe in Star Wars Zero Company, although fans will need sharp eyes to catch him. Electronic Arts has released the final trailer for the turn-based tactics game, which launches next week.

The trailer showcases cinematic scenes and XCOM-style squad combat. However, the biggest talking point arrives at about the 1:45 mark, when Rex briefly appears wearing his familiar helmet and clone trooper armour.

His screen time lasts only a moment, but the cameo was enough to excite fans of The Clone Wars. Rex has become one of the most recognisable clone troopers in modern Star Wars, making even a short appearance significant.

Rex’s Clone Wars history

Captain Rex first appeared in the 2008 animated Star Wars: The Clone Wars film before becoming a central figure in the television series. He primarily served alongside Jedi Generals Anakin Skywalker and Ahsoka Tano during the Clone Wars.

The character has remained an important part of Star Wars storytelling beyond that conflict. Rex later appeared in Star Wars Rebels and Star Wars: The Bad Batch, helping connect different periods of the franchise’s animated history.

As with the other clone troopers in the animated productions, Rex has been voiced by Dee Bradley Baker.

How large is Rex’s role?

Baker’s involvement in Zero Company was confirmed when the game’s full cast was announced in July 2026. At that stage, however, he was identified as the voice of another clone trooper, Trick, rather than Rex.

That leaves several questions unanswered. The trailer does not establish how much Rex will feature in the campaign, nor does it confirm whether Baker is voicing additional surprise clone characters. Anakin Skywalker is also set to appear, although his importance to the story remains unclear.

The game follows a group of misfits working covertly with the Galactic Republic. Its squad-based structure has led to the simple description “Star Wars XCOM”, with players commanding a team through turn-based tactical encounters.

After spending 10 hours with the game, its XCOM-inspired design appears to be a close match for that comparison. The preview assessment described it as potentially the strongest interpretation yet of XCOM-style squad tactics.

Star Wars Zero Company is scheduled to release on 27 August for Windows PC, PlayStation 5 and Xbox Series X. The listed price is $49.99 on PC and $59.99 on PlayStation 5 and Xbox Series X.
