The Discord community for the popular Terraria mod Calamity has been compromised, with attackers using its large membership to promote a cryptocurrency before the coin was rapidly pumped and dumped.
The incident adds to a difficult period for the decade-old mod. Calamity has faced two separate accusations of endangering minors, an unresolved claim that developers were owed several thousand dollars in wages, and the decision to halt development.
A 250,000-member target
Before 9 October 2026, the Calamity Discord server had more than 250,000 individual members. That made it a substantial online gaming community despite the mod remaining unfinished after its developers announced in August that they were ceasing all development.
The server’s size appears to have attracted a notorious Discord hacker known as “Kata”. The first warning sign came when the compromised server issued a server-wide ping. For some members, the unexpected announcement briefly suggested that work on Calamity might resume.

Members warned to leave
About an hour later, moderators on the r/CalamityMod subreddit published an emergency post telling members to leave the Discord server and avoid interacting with the cryptocurrency being promoted there.
During that window, the server was spammed with links to a coin named after the community. The token was then immediately pumped and dumped after users learned that the server had been compromised.
How access was obtained
A subreddit post, later confirmed by the previous server owner, said the takeover began when two people posing as former moderators tricked the owner into handing over access.
After the cryptocurrency scheme was exposed, one of those users identified themselves as Kata. Community reports have linked Kata to alleged attacks on other Discord communities, with a separate report claiming that dozens of popular servers had been affected over the previous two years.
Server content wiped
A former moderator later removed the server’s contents after discovering that the attackers had failed to remove their administrative permissions. In a follow-up post, the moderator said they were able to “nuke” the server. The channels and messages were wiped, although Kata and another user—possibly an alternate account or an associate—continued trying to promote the scheme.
The remaining “#announce” channel contained messages from one of the attackers claiming that “no crypto slop will be posted” and that “some wrong people got permissions”. Those messages did little to restore confidence.
Tens of thousands of members reportedly left the server in the following two days, leaving the community to assess what remains of an unfinished Terraria project.
