Brütal Legend 2 Is Not Currently in Development

Fans hoping Double Fine’s return to independence might lead straight to Brütal Legend 2 will need to wait. Studio head Tim Schafer has confirmed that a sequel is not currently being made, with the team instead turning its attention to smaller and stranger projects.

Double Fine has no sequel underway

During an appearance on Kinda Funny Games Daily on 21 August, Schafer was asked when Brütal Legend 2 would arrive. His answer was clear: “We’re not working on that now.” He added that a follow-up could happen one day, but Double Fine’s immediate plan is to create “a whole bunch of crazy little weird things”.

That leaves the door open without suggesting that production has started. Schafer believes the original game still contains plenty of ideas that could support another entry, although the studio’s current priorities lie elsewhere.

A sequel could showcase newer metal artists

The conversation also touched on the challenge of revisiting a game built around heavy metal culture, particularly after the deaths of Ozzy Osbourne and Lemmy Kilmister. Schafer’s view is that a new game would not have to look only to the past.

While making the first Brütal Legend, Schafer discovered bands he had not encountered during high school. He said metal musicians continue to approach him, suggesting there would always be fresh artists and legends to feature. He specifically noted that Rob Halford and Lita Ford are still active figures, while describing the original game as a time capsule of metal icons in their prime.

What Double Fine is doing next

In the short term, Double Fine fans can expect updates on Kiln and the Amnesia Fortnight 2026 – Indie Reboot Kickstarter. The campaign will fund a game jam and documentary, with one project created during the jam planned for official release. If that happens, it could be Double Fine’s first released game since the studio separated from Xbox Game Studios.

Double Fine was part of Xbox Game Studios from June 2019 until July 2026. It was one of five studios that Xbox CEO Asha Sharma said would be divested. In an Xbox Wire announcement, Sharma wrote that owning every great independent studio was “neither possible nor desirable”.

Double Fine subsequently laid off 23 developers, but the studio has now regained the rights to all its intellectual property and is pursuing its own direction. That new path does not currently include Brütal Legend 2.

How to play Brütal Legend now

Although there is no announced sequel, the original Brütal Legend remains playable on PC and through the backward-compatible Xbox 360 version on Xbox One and Xbox Series X. It is also included in the Xbox Game Pass Premium catalogue.
