The Blood of Dawnwalker gives every major decision a cost: time. Coen has just 30 days to rescue his family before Brencis’ coronation, so quests, combat and character upgrades must be planned carefully.
Unlike many open-world RPGs, the clock does not advance continuously while you explore. Instead, important actions consume clearly marked time segments. This guide explains how the system works and how the day-night cycle changes Coen’s options.

How time segments work
The journal displays the current day-night cycle. Each day contains eight segments, followed by eight segments of night. Across the 30-day deadline, that creates 480 available segments.
Time moves forward only when Coen performs an action that uses one or more segments. Examples include investigating a scene, interrogating a non-player character and fighting enemies. Before you confirm an action, the game shows its precise time cost.

For example, reaching day 11 means 19 days remain before Brencis’ coronation. If the night is halfway finished, four segments are left before day 12 begins. A three-segment quest such as Defeat Bakir’s Headhunters would leave one segment remaining.
Not every activity appears in the journal. When an action is time-consuming, the gauge in the top-right corner begins to glow. Grey sections on that gauge show the number of segments required. Attacking a soldier camp, for instance, can advance the clock by one segment.

What should you spend time on?
Skill development also takes time. At a shrine, Coen can open the perks menu and use skill points to unlock passive or active abilities. Some upgrades cost no time, while others cost two segments; most require one.
That cost does not mean upgrades should be avoided. Many quests remain available for several days, making time segments function much like a strategic currency. You can invest them in quests, optional activities or abilities depending on the strength and options you want before the coronation.
Free exploration does not consume time. You can travel around the world and investigate locations at your own pace, provided you avoid actions that trigger the time system.

How day and night change the game
The time of day affects the world, available activities and quest solutions. Most shops close at night, and fewer people are out in the streets. A daytime objective may therefore rely on conversation, while its nighttime alternative could involve breaking in. Both approaches can lead to the same goal.
Some quests are available only during the day or night. The journal identifies these missions with a small sun or moon icon.

Coen’s abilities by time of day
Coen’s powers also change with the cycle. At night, he takes his vampire form. He becomes stronger, can drain blood and can use Shadowstep to teleport and walk along walls. During the day, he is human and can use witchcraft abilities instead.
A shrine can be used to skip time, but doing so brings Coen closer to the coronation. Timed quests need additional care: missions marked with a clock icon in the journal expire after a certain period.
A practical approach to the deadline
- Explore freely before committing to actions that display a time cost.
- Check the journal for the exact number of segments required.
- Use day-only and night-only opportunities when they suit your preferred approach.
- Spend time on useful abilities rather than treating every upgrade as a delay.
- Be cautious when skipping time at a shrine or accepting a timed quest.
The Blood of Dawnwalker is built around a time-sensitive narrative RPG structure in which actions and decisions matter. After the prologue, Coen can explore Vale Sangora and confront Brencis’ boyars in the order he chooses, but the 30-day limit makes every costly action worth considering.
