Where Blood Chains fits into Ichigo’s power progression
In the manga’s final battle with Yhwach, Ichigo moves rapidly from his Merged Hollow form, commonly called the Horn of Salvation, into True Bankai. Yhwach then breaks the Bankai almost immediately with The Almighty, his reality-altering ability.
That fast escalation left little room to examine what happens when Ichigo tries to balance the competing forces within his soul. The anime changes the sequence by inserting Blood Chains as an intermediate stage, giving the story time to show the unstable relationship between his Hollow and Shinigami energies.
Ichigo reveals the form while attempting to protect Orihime and Rukia, who have fallen during the confrontation with Yhwach. He is carrying the familiar single-bladed Shikai rather than his usual Bankai, while red, chain-like energy wraps around his body and Hollow-style horns appear above his head.
The result is visually distinct from Ichigo’s established transformations. More importantly, it makes the character’s power structure harder to categorise, because Blood Chains does not fit neatly into the progression viewers thought they understood.
The leading Blood Chains theories
Could Ichigo have more than one Bankai route?
One theory proposes that Blood Chains represents a different way for Ichigo to reach or express Bankai. Rather than treating his abilities as one linear sequence, this interpretation imagines several possible configurations based on which parts of his hybrid nature are most strongly involved.
Fans have used the transformation’s description in the Bleach: Brave Souls mobile game as part of that discussion, exploring combinations of Ichigo’s Shinigami, Hollow, Quincy and Fullbring powers. Under this reading, Blood Chains could be one of several possible expressions, with other variations still waiting to be shown.
Or is it simply True Bankai under Hollow influence?
A more restrained explanation is that Blood Chains is not a second Bankai at all. It may be Ichigo activating True Bankai while drawing particularly heavily on his Hollow power. The underlying Bankai would remain the same, with the visible difference caused by Ichigo’s altered spiritual state.
This counter-theory is easier to reconcile with the idea of one core Bankai. However, the debate continues because Ichigo’s spiritual mechanics have never been presented as a straightforward system.
Why the anime-original form matters
Blood Chains is significant because Kubo’s involvement with the anime allows the final cour to expand the story beyond the manga’s compressed ending. With Kubo closely involved with Studio Pierrot, including the upcoming Part 4: The Calamity, new scenes can add lore rather than functioning as disposable filler.
The form did not appear in the manga for readers to overlook. It is a new addition created for the anime, giving the adaptation an opportunity to address some of the gaps left by the rushed final arc.
That extra space also suggests that Ichigo’s True Zangetsu may be more flexible than a simple balance between Quincy, Hollow and Shinigami power. Blood Chains presents his abilities as something dynamic, changing according to the energy he draws upon and the pressure of the moment.
For readers and viewers following the wider Bleach: Thousand Year Blood War story, the key question is whether the form will receive a definitive explanation or remain an intentionally ambiguous part of Ichigo’s evolution.
What could come next?
At present, Blood Chains can be read in two ways: as evidence of multiple Bankai variations, or as the natural result of Ichigo’s hybrid soul adapting during a crisis. The anime has not settled the question.
Either interpretation leaves room for Part 4 to reshape the limits of Ichigo’s power. Until then, Blood Chains stands as one of the series’ most intriguing new additions and a reminder that Ichigo’s final form may not be as final, or as fixed, as fans once assumed.
