Firaxis Games, the studio behind the tactical XCOM series, gives Marvel a thoughtful turn-based strategy adventure. Players build a team of heroes to oppose the resurrected Lilith, using deck-building, environmental hazards, enemy waves and chained attacks to shape each encounter.

The base game includes 13 playable characters, while expansions add four more. Its unusually broad cast includes heroes likely to play major roles in future Marvel stories, including Ghost Rider.

Marvel Snap turns character collecting into a brisk digital card game. It combines accessible matches with attractive Marvel presentation and a satisfying gameplay loop. Unlocking characters from the first two in-game series is generous, although later seasons can slow down and reduce player control.

Those mobile-game limitations do not diminish its appeal. Marvel Snap remains one of the strongest Marvel experiences for a phone, tablet or portable gaming device.

This single-player adventure puts players in the role of Peter Quill, better known as Star-Lord, while the rest of the Guardians fight alongside him under computer control. Each ally has distinct abilities that can be directed during combat.

Branching dialogue, an engaging story and polished third-person action give the game a strong sense of character. Its detailed take on the Guardians’ universe makes it a worthwhile choice for fans of the film trilogy and Marvel games alike.

Competitive balance is not perfect, but the three-on-three action makes Marvel vs. Capcom 2 an exceptional arcade game. It also helped inspire a generation of players to practise at home with arcade sticks. For a home setup, the arcade parts range is useful when planning replacement controls.

Choosing a Marvel game for your setup

These ten games cover a wide range of play styles, from local arcade competition to solo strategy and family-friendly cooperative play.
