Game Freak is best known for the mainline Pokémon series, but the Japanese developer has repeatedly used its independence to explore very different ideas. Earlier examples include Little Town Hero and Tembo the Badass Elephant, continuing a creative tradition that stretches back decades.
Although Game Freak has long been closely associated with Nintendo hardware, its wider catalogue has also reached PlayStation 4, Windows PC and Xbox One. Giga Wrecker, for example, first appeared on Steam Early Access before expanding to other platforms. Its next original project is taking that broader approach again, with no Switch 2 version announced so far.
Beast of Reincarnation launches on 4 August
Previously revealed under the name Project Bloom in 2023, Beast of Reincarnation is scheduled for PlayStation 5, Windows PC and Xbox Series X from 4 August. The publisher is Fictions, Inc., a company that emerged from the remains of Private Division, which had been connected to the project earlier in its development.
A post-apocalyptic journey through a ruined Japan
Director Kota Furushima has described the game as bold and tonally unlike Game Freak’s previous work. The story follows Emma, known as the Sealer, and her dog Koo as they travel through the year 4026. Their world is a devastated version of Japan, where a corrupted creature must be defeated.
The visual direction reinforces that dramatic departure. The landscapes recall the natural beauty and threatening atmosphere associated with the classic Princess Mononoke anime, while early concept work by Kazuma Koda, who also worked on Nier: Automata, established the project’s distinct mood. Later trailers have shown a striking world that is also heavily damaged and overgrown.
Game Freak takes on Soulslike-inspired combat
The footage places combat ahead of the traditional creature-collecting systems associated with Pokémon. Encounters include parries and special techniques called Blooming Arts. When these abilities are activated, the action slows, giving players more time to consider their next move.
That structure has drawn comparisons with Dark Souls, although the game remains its own new direction for the studio. Emma and Koo can both be developed through a skill tree, letting players improve the two companions as their journey continues.
The pair will need every advantage available to endure the hostile wasteland. With its unusual setting, action-focused design and clear shift in tone, Beast of Reincarnation is shaping up as a notable release in Game Freak’s history—and one to watch in the coming summer schedule.
