The future of a second Barbie film depends on Warner Bros. securing agreements with director Greta Gerwig and stars Margot Robbie and Ryan Gosling before the end of 2026.

A report by The New York Times says negotiations have continued for months, but the studio has yet to finalise the arrangements needed to move the sequel forward.

Why Barbie 2 has a 2026 deadline

Gerwig’s 2023 adaptation became a major hit, but none of the three central creative figures was contractually committed to an immediate follow-up. Instead, Gerwig, Robbie and Gosling moved on to other projects.

The main issue is now the structure of Warner Bros.’ offers to the trio. If an agreement is not completed by December 2026, the film rights will return to Mattel.

What happens if the rights revert to Mattel?

Mattel Studios would still be able to make another Barbie movie after the existing arrangement expires. However, that production might have no connection to Warner Bros.’ 2023 film, its cast or its established creative direction.

Warner Bros. is keen to prevent that outcome as it searches for major successes following the poor performance of Supergirl. Despite making several substantial offers, the studio does not appear close to completing the necessary deals.

Warner Bros. Pictures co-chairs Michael De Luca and Pam Abdy said the company has a rights agreement with Mattel and has made multiple large proposals for the next Barbie film, but no agreement had been reached. A representative for the studio attributed the delays to the representatives for Gerwig, Robbie and Gosling responding slowly.

Other Mattel and Warner Bros. projects ahead

Although the outlook for Barbie 2 is uncertain, several related projects remain on the horizon. Mattel Studios’ Matchbox The Movie is scheduled for Apple TV+ in October, Gerwig’s Narnia: The Magician’s Nephew is planned for Netflix in February 2027, and Gosling is expected to play Ghost Rider in the Marvel Cinematic Universe sometime in 2028.
