Chases, kills and a dark Thumper reference
Much of the film follows the family as they try to survive Bambi’s pursuit. The creature overturns cars, invades their home and keeps the pressure on as the group attempts to escape.
The story later brings them into contact with local hunters who have been damaging the forest while searching for Bambi. That conflict gives the film its environmental argument and shifts some responsibility for the violence towards human activity.
Allen also includes graphic deaths, including a particularly extreme moment involving Bambi’s antlers. A standout sequence involving rabbits serves as a grim reworking of Thumper, Bambi’s best-known companion, and is one of the film’s clearest jokes at the expense of its source material.
How strong is the environmental angle?
Salten’s original novel is not only a coming-of-age story; it is also an early environmental work. Its detailed descriptions of the forest sit beside criticism of the harm humans cause to nature.
The Reckoning approaches that theme with considerably less subtlety. It is primarily a bloody monster movie, and its environmental message shares the screen with deliberately outrageous violence. Still, the connection gives the adaptation more substance than its premise might initially suggest.
