Baldur’s Gate 3 has received a significant platform upgrade three years after launch. Larian Studios’ award-winning role-playing game now supports Xbox Play Anywhere, letting players who own the digital Xbox version access it on PC and compatible handhelds through the Xbox app at no extra cost.
The feature has been highly anticipated by Xbox players since last autumn, when an Xbox Store listing accidentally revealed Xbox Play Anywhere support in an Xbox Store listing. Its arrival also coincides with the game’s third anniversary, with Baldur’s Gate 3 currently discounted by 30% across multiple platforms.

How Xbox Play Anywhere works for Baldur’s Gate 3
Xbox Play Anywhere is Microsoft’s cross-buy service. When a supported game is purchased digitally through the Xbox Store, the same purchase provides access on Xbox consoles and Windows PCs.
The service also synchronises cloud saves, progress and Xbox achievements across supported devices. That means a player can continue a campaign without starting over when moving between Xbox and PC.
For example, someone playing Baldur’s Gate 3 on a supported handheld such as the ROG Xbox Ally X can move to a desktop for a demanding combat encounter, then carry on from the same point.
Play Anywhere has expanded steadily, although third-party support remains far from universal. The catalogue includes The Outer Worlds 2, Doom: The Dark Ages and Clair Obscur: Expedition 33. Recent additions included PGA Tour 2K25 and Buckshot Roulette, making Baldur’s Gate 3 one of the programme’s most prominent additions.
More Baldur’s Gate stories are in development
The update arrives while the wider Baldur’s Gate universe continues to expand through licensed projects. Larian has completed development on Baldur’s Gate 3 and is now working on its next project, Divinity, but the game’s setting remains active beyond the original release.
Earlier this year, Wizards of the Coast announced Baldur’s Gate 3: Astarion, a prequel novel by bestselling fantasy author T. Kingfisher. The book will explore the vampire spawn’s life before the events of the game.
Dark Horse has also announced an upcoming Baldur’s Gate 3 comic series. Larian later clarified that it is not involved with the project, and further details about the comic are limited.
The franchise is also being developed for television. HBO announced a Baldur’s Gate series from Craig Mazin, co-creator of Chernobyl and The Last of Us. The show is intended to continue the story after Baldur’s Gate 3, but HBO and Hasbro have not provided further details about casting, production or a release window.
