Baldur’s Gate 3 remains one of the most replayable modern CRPGs. Larian Studios’ 2023 role-playing game still attracts weekend peaks of around 75,000 concurrent players on Steam, nearly three years after launch.

1. Protect every companion in a permadeath run
Withers and Revivify make fallen party members easier to bring back, which can reduce the danger of combat. Remove that safety net by treating every companion’s death as permanent. An unlucky battle, failed conversation or poor decision could permanently change your party, making even familiar encounters feel tense.
2. Save the Sword Coast with only two characters
Build your protagonist around a single companion and refuse to recruit anyone else into the active party. That partner might be a romantic interest, sibling-like ally or trusted friend. The smaller group makes fights and exploration more demanding, while adding extra weight to the relationship at the centre of the story.
If the challenge proves too severe, Withers’ hirelings can provide additional support without changing the core idea of the run.
3. Embrace the Illithid powers as a githyanki
Partway through the game, the tadpole offers access to powerful Illithid abilities. They can improve combat options, including ways to group enemies together, but using them also means accepting partial transformation into the very creature you are trying to defeat.
Commit fully: develop the Illithid skill tree, use those powers as your main combat tools, pursue the Emperor’s romance and become a mind flayer at the end. Playing a githyanki makes the roleplay especially pointed, given that their culture traditionally despises Illithids.
4. Choose the Dark Urge and seek redemption
The Dark Urge is an additional Origin option with unique scenes, exceptionally grim dialogue and graphic violence. Its personal story places the protagonist much closer to the game’s central conflict than a standard custom character.
You can surrender to those violent impulses or resist them at every turn. The redemption route creates a strong role-playing objective while preserving the surprises surrounding the character’s past.
5. Commit to a truly villainous campaign
An evil playthrough does not require the Dark Urge. Choose a character who would normally be associated with the Tiefling refugees, then betray their camp in Act 1. The consequences make this a particularly uncomfortable role-playing experiment.
A ruthless campaign can involve siding with the goblins, slaughtering the Tieflings and recruiting Minthara. From there, see how far the party can advance while consistently choosing power over compassion.
6. Make conversation your strongest weapon
Build for Charisma, Deception and Stealth rather than straightforward combat. Useful choices include Minor Illusion, Disguise Self and strong lockpicking ability.
When an encounter appears, try talking, sneaking, pickpocketing or stealing your way through it instead of starting a fight. This approach is slower and more complicated, but it highlights the freedom of Baldur’s Gate 3’s role-playing systems.
7. Assemble a party of summoners
Instead of balancing fighters, healers and spellcasters, create a group that fills the battlefield with allies. A sudden magical army can turn encounters into a completely different tactical puzzle.
- Circle of Spores Druid: use abilities such as Conjure Woodland Being and temporary fungal zombies.
- Beast Master Ranger: let a scaling animal companion fight independently while you attack from range.
- Necromancer Wizard: cast Animate Dead, then improve the health and damage of your zombies and skeletons.
Mix these concepts across the party or repeat one of them for an even more specialised run.
8. Give everyone the same class
A conventional party covers every major role, but four identical characters can produce much stranger results. Try a group of Wild Magic Sorcerers and accept the chaos when spells set allies alight or transform nearby creatures into cats.
Barbarians offer a more direct version of the experiment, while four Bards create an intentionally awkward, combat-light party that must rely on teamwork and improvisation.
9. Hunt achievements with purpose
After a first playthrough, there are likely still Steam or Xbox achievements waiting to be unlocked. Use your next campaign to pursue unusual objectives rather than simply following the main story.
Possible targets include using one enemy as a weapon against another, petting Scratch and the Owlbear cub at the same time, or reading 100 books during a single playthrough. Some achievements are best discovered naturally, so avoid looking up every requirement if surprise matters to you.
10. Choose an intentionally poor signature weapon
Restricting your equipment can create a gentler alternative to an Honor Mode-style challenge. Refuse to use weapons and fight with your fists, carry only a basic dagger, or commit to an awkward option that makes every victory feel earned.
The Comeback Handaxe is one example: it is a boomerang-style weapon that deals damage when caught. A deliberately weak weapon is easier to tolerate for a character who already prefers magic, but it still forces you to rethink familiar battles.

The best Baldur’s Gate 3 replay rules are the ones that change how you approach the game. Whether you protect every companion, reject the usual party structure or talk your way past danger, a focused restriction can reveal systems you may have ignored before.
