A fresh way to play Baldur’s Gate 3
Baldur’s Gate 3 normally uses turn-based combat, giving each character an orderly turn and giving the player time to consider abilities, positioning and enemy tactics. That structure suits its Dungeons & Dragons foundations, where careful planning is a major part of the experience.

However, the Brawl mod offers a very different approach. Created by modder tinybike, the mod changes combat to real-time-with-pause, or RTwP. The Baldur’s Gate 3 Brawl mod had nearly 20,000 downloads at the time of the source material.

How real-time-with-pause works
RTwP combat unfolds continuously, but the player can pause whenever a decision needs attention. Before an encounter, or when a fight begins, the game can pause automatically so you can review the battlefield and prepare your party.

Party members can then be given broad instructions. A Mage might be told to use fire attacks, a Paladin can focus on the most dangerous opponent, and a Cleric can heal allies once their health drops below 50 per cent. Unpause the game and watch those orders play out in real time.

The result is faster and less predictable than the standard system. When a plan falls apart, pausing lets you reassess, change commands and try to regain control. It can be stressful, but that pressure is also what makes the mod feel substantially different from the original combat design.
Why try the Brawl mod?

One reason is that RTwP is central to many classic computer role-playing games. Older titles such as Baldur’s Gate and Dragon Age: Origins use this style, while games such as Pillars of Eternity 2: Deadfire were built around it. Players who want to explore that part of the genre may find the Brawl mod a gentler introduction because it uses a familiar cast, world and ruleset.
Turn-based and RTwP systems demand different habits. Turn-based battles encourage deliberate individual decisions, while RTwP asks players to set priorities, observe the result and intervene at the right moment. The debate between turn-based and real-time-with-pause combat exists because neither approach suits every player.

The other appeal is longevity. If you have spent years with Baldur’s Gate 3 and want another reason to begin a campaign, changing the combat rhythm can make familiar encounters feel new without replacing the rest of the game.
Practical tips for RTwP combat
Install the mod only after backing up your save or starting a new save file, following the modder’s recommended practice. These RTwP combat tips are also useful for getting comfortable with the pace.
- Configure auto-pause carefully. Useful triggers include “Enemy Sighted”, “Combat Start” and “Character Low Health”. The Brawl mod menu allows these settings to be adjusted.
- Pause often. The spacebar, or your assigned pause button, is part of the system rather than an emergency measure. Queue up actions, let the fight run briefly, then pause again to revise the plan.
- Maintain formation while exploring. Send a stealthy character ahead, keep tougher frontline characters in front, and place fragile Mages and archers behind them. If combat starts suddenly, your party will already be positioned sensibly.

A worthwhile experiment for RPG fans
The Brawl mod does not make the original turn-based system less valuable. Instead, it presents Baldur’s Gate 3 through a faster, more reactive lens and provides a practical way to sample the combat style associated with many older cRPGs.

Whether you are revisiting the Forgotten Realms or trying RTwP for the first time, the key is to treat pausing as an active command. Set priorities, watch the battle, and be ready to change course when the plan inevitably meets chaos.
