The latest Avengers: Doomsday trailer provided the clearest look yet at Robert Downey Jr. as Doctor Doom during Marvel’s D23 presentation.
The film was one of several major Marvel Cinematic Universe showcases at the event, which also featured the cast of the upcoming X-Men reboot.
Doctor Doom’s story begins with a devastating loss
The trailer shows the Fantastic Four explaining Doom’s history and threat to the wider group of MCU heroes. The villain appears to have endured a profound personal loss, setting him on a path toward becoming a danger across multiple universes.
Even the Fantastic Four seem unsettled by the scale of his actions. Reed Richards, traditionally Doom’s principal rival in many versions of the story, appears surprised by how far the antagonist has gone.

Will the film keep Doom behind his mask?
Downey Jr.’s casting raises an obvious question: will audiences see his face at all? If Doctor Doom remains masked throughout the film, the decision to bring back the actor associated so strongly with Iron Man could become an especially unusual piece of casting.
The production has also prompted speculation about whether the story will directly acknowledge that Doom and Tony Stark are portrayed by the same actor. It may instead function as a reference for longtime MCU viewers, including those who have followed the franchise for almost two decades and those who stopped watching after Avengers: Endgame in 2019.
That connection remains unconfirmed, leaving the mask and Downey Jr.’s role among the film’s biggest unanswered questions.
Release date and Marvel’s next event
Avengers: Doomsday is scheduled to arrive in cinemas on December 18. The film will lead into Avengers: Secret Wars, which is scheduled to premiere one year later on December 17, 2027.
