Potential spoilers ahead for Avengers: Doomsday.
Marvel Studios is increasing the promotional push for Avengers: Doomsday, which is scheduled to reach cinemas in less than four months. Five teaser trailers and a D23 special look have already highlighted Doctor Doom’s destructive potential, but one major question remains: how will the film deal with Doom’s resemblance to Tony Stark?
Robert Downey Jr. is returning to the Marvel Cinematic Universe as Victor Von Doom, rather than Iron Man. That raises several possibilities. Victor could be Tony Stark from another universe, or the film could simply allow the Avengers to react to a new villain who happens to have the face of their fallen friend.
Did David Harbour hint at Doom’s identity?
David Harbour, who plays Alexei Shostakov, also known as Red Guardian, recently spoke with Variety about his HBO series DTF St. Louis. When asked to share one line from the upcoming Avengers film without context, Harbour answered in Alexei’s Russian accent: “You … are Tony Stark.”
It is impossible to know whether Harbour was joking, improvising or accidentally revealing a genuine piece of dialogue. Still, the line suggests that Red Guardian could be the character who openly acknowledges that Victor Von Doom looks like Tony Stark.
That would turn the familiar “I am Iron Man” idea on its head. Doom comes from an alternate Earth connected to the film’s version of the Fantastic Four, so Reed Richards and Sue Storm may have no reason to recognise Tony Stark. The Avengers from the main Marvel universe, however, would understand exactly why Doom’s face is unsettling.
Will Doctor Doom remove his mask?
Marvel has not yet shown the film’s Doctor Doom unmasked, leaving the character’s presentation uncertain. The filmmakers may keep Downey Jr.’s face hidden for much of the film, although casting one of the MCU’s most recognisable performers naturally creates expectations that his face will appear on screen.
If most of the Avengers are surprised by Doom’s identity, the resulting reaction could become one of Avengers: Doomsday’s strongest character moments. Harbour’s comment may have given away that setup, but Marvel’s strict secrecy makes a deliberately misleading answer just as plausible.

The returning and newly introduced performers include Chris Hemsworth as Thor, Anthony Mackie as Captain America, Sebastian Stan as the Winter Soldier, Letitia Wright as Shuri, Paul Rudd as Ant-Man, Wyatt Russell as U.S. Agent, Tenoch Huerta Mejía as Namor, Vanessa Kirby as Sue Storm, Pedro Pascal as Mister Fantastic, Joseph Quinn as the Human Torch, Ebon Moss-Bachrach as the Thing and Simu Liu as Shang-Chi.
The ensemble also includes Florence Pugh as White Widow, Kelsey Grammer as the Beast, Lewis Pullman as Sentry, Danny Ramirez as Falcon, David Harbour as Red Guardian, Winston Duke as M’Baku, Hannah John-Kamen as Ghost, Tom Hiddleston as Loki, Patrick Stewart as Professor X, Ian McKellen as Magneto, Alan Cumming as Nightcrawler, Rebecca Romijn as Mystique, James Marsden as Cyclops and Channing Tatum as Gambit.
When is Avengers: Doomsday released?
Avengers: Doomsday is scheduled to arrive in Australian cinemas on 18 December. A direct follow-up, Avengers: Secret Wars, is already planned for 2027.
