Jersey Jack Pinball has unveiled AVATAR: The Battle For Pandora, its new machine based on the world of Pandora. The game is already shipping to buyers, following its public reveal.
Jersey Jack’s Avatar pinball machine
The machine draws from the AVATAR film franchise, with its artwork, modes and themes concentrating mainly on the second movie, released in 2022. It is the second pinball game based on the property, but the licence has moved from one manufacturer to another.
Under the glass, the layout presents Pandora’s ocean and skies across two connected lower playfields. One includes a pop bumper, while the other uses two small flippers. The result is a playfield structure that gives the machine a distinctive vertical and multi-level feel.
There are two models available for AVATAR: the Limited Edition (LE) and Collector’s Edition (CE). Jersey Jack no longer offers a Standard model in this format.
- Limited Edition: 5,000 machines, with an MSRP of $12,000.
- Collector’s Edition: 1,000 machines, with an MSRP of $15,000.
Final pricing, freight and other purchase details should be confirmed with an authorised Jersey Jack Pinball distributor. The manufacturer has also shared additional photographs and information on Facebook.
Features shared by both editions
The LE and CE use the same playfield and core feature package. Both versions include:
- Six flippers: three full-size and three mini flippers
- Six balls
- Six ramps
- Three slingshots
- Scoop and scramp targets
- A playfield magnet
- Two connected lower playfields
- An Infinity Mirror ball lock
- UV lighting and reactive decals
- Sculpted playfield toys
The game can also feature one of six different versions of the UV Reactive Banshee Sculpture.
Audio content includes recorded lines from Stephen Lang, who played Colonel Quaritch in the films, alongside clips from both movies. Although both films are represented, the sequel provides the primary creative direction.
What sets the Collector’s Edition apart?
The main differences are visual and collectible rather than changes to the playfield layout. The CE adds a cooler-style holographic topper, bioluminescent RGB UV inks within the artwork, extra backglass lighting and specialised cabinet armour. The armour pattern will vary between cabinets.
Collector’s Edition buyers also receive Neytiri’s Arrow Shooter Rod and several additional premium details. Its production run is considerably smaller than the LE, with only 1,000 units planned.
Gameplay details and deeper dive
Jersey Jack’s official deep-dive presentation runs for approximately 18 minutes and explains the machine’s rules, design and features in detail. One highlighted rule is a left-hand combo: a kicker on the left outlane holds the ball, then launches it into a sequence where scoring must be completed with the left flipper. Using the right flipper ends the combo.
Why this release matters
AVATAR: The Battle For Pandora appears to be another deliberate step towards a premium pinball experience, combining a heavily themed playfield with complex rules and several unusual physical features. The two lower playfields, UV-reactive elements and multi-stage shots give it a strong identity beyond its film licence.
There is also an interesting link to Jersey Jack Pinball’s history. Stern’s earlier AVATAR machine helped inspire Jack Guarnieri to enter the pinball business, while The Wizard of Oz introduced innovations that had a lasting impact on the modern market. This new release therefore represents a notable return to the same fictional universe from a different manufacturer.
Pinball on location versus home ownership
For Australian operators, the commercial question is separate from the machine’s appeal to collectors. Toy Story 4 has reportedly performed strongly on location and sits at a similar price point to AVATAR, yet pinball can struggle to match the earnings of a video arcade machine costing around $12,000.
That challenge affects the wider pinball industry, not just Jersey Jack. Deep rulesets can be rewarding for dedicated owners, but casual visitors may need instruction before they understand how to play. A simpler, immediately accessible design could be easier to operate in a public venue, unless the local pinball audience is large enough to support more complex games.
