Avatar Aang: The Last Airbender has arrived on Paramount Plus, giving fans the first new animated chapter in the franchise in more than a decade. The 99-minute film reunites Aang with Team Avatar and fills in part of the story between Avatar: The Last Airbender and The Legend of Korra.
The film already delivers impressive action animation, but an unused version of one major fight would have made its violence considerably more confronting.
Spoilers for Avatar Aang: The Last Airbender
Tom Barkel, an animator who worked on Avatar Aang, shared an unused animatic of the sequence. An animatic is a preliminary scene assembled from animated storyboards, and this version presents the battle in far harsher terms. Barkel later removed the post from X, although fans preserved the footage.
A darker version of the Tagah battle
The animatic reworks the confrontation between Tagah and Team Avatar while Aang attempts to recover Sonam’s staff. In the finished film, Tagah betrays Aang’s allies, destroys their airship and turns on Katara. She initially faces him alone before Toph, Zuko and Sokka enter the fight.
Although the group has four fighters against one opponent, Tagah overwhelms them with focused blasts of wind. The film later reveals that those attacks killed Aang’s friends, leaving Katara to revive them with water carrying enhanced spiritual properties.
Barkel’s version reaches the same outcome, but removes much of the ambiguity. Tagah attacks with visible fury, striking hard enough to make his opponents cough blood before they fall with blank, lifeless expressions. Each death is given time to register, making the scene especially disturbing.
The most uncomfortable moment comes when Tagah kills Sokka in front of Katara. The sequence also suggests that Tagah targets the group according to their national identities, with Toph and Zuko receiving particular attention because of what earth and fire benders did to his people.
Why the alternate scene could never be canon
Neither version could permanently kill these characters. Avatar Aang takes place before The Legend of Korra, in which Aang’s friends are either still alive or die much later in their lives. Even so, the unused animatic offers an unsettling glimpse at how much more explicit and brutal the battle might have been.
