Atomfall brings a distinctly British twist to post-apocalyptic gaming
Set in the Lake District, Atomfall is Rebellion Developments’ 2025 action game about an alternate version of northern England after a nuclear disaster. It offers a compact, choice-driven adventure with a strong detective element rather than attempting to match the scale of modern open-world RPGs.
The premise draws from the 1957 Windscale fire, the worst nuclear accident in the United Kingdom’s history. Although the British government downplayed the incident at the time, radioactive material spread across the UK and Europe. Atomfall reimagines the event as a much larger catastrophe, adds science-fiction ideas and relocates the fictionalised disaster closer to the picturesque shores of Lake Windermere, rather than its real-world site near Gosforth.
A smaller, denser alternative to Fallout
Players expecting a vast wasteland may find Atomfall more focused. Its world is divided into densely packed open-world zones, with characters, clues and discoveries around almost every corner. There is no levelling system or experience-point progression, so the game is less of a traditional RPG.
Its closest comparison is arguably Fallout: New Vegas: decisions, alliances and investigation matter more than simply accumulating power. The result is an adventure built around exploration and consequences, with less empty space between points of interest.
Investigation, freedom and six possible endings
Atomfall works partly as a detective game. Characters have their own problems, while clues and leads are recorded in the player’s journal. Exploration is encouraged through the default interface, which does not provide quest or waypoint markers. Those aids can be switched on if preferred.
The game also gives players considerable control over how they deal with the people they meet. Anyone can be killed, but it is also possible to attempt a run without killing anyone. The people you choose to help influence which of six endings you receive.
There is a darker side to the journey, too. The atmosphere can become deeply unsettling and occasionally frightening, particularly when danger emerges from underground tunnels. That sudden sense of threat will feel familiar to players who have been surprised by hostile creatures in the Fallout series.
English character without losing the setting
The Lake District setting gives Atomfall a personality of its own. It plays with British details, including an achievement involving drinking tea and eating a Cornish pasty cake within 30 seconds, but the humour does not overwhelm the landscape or turn the setting into a caricature.
For Australian players with an Xbox or PC subscription, Atomfall is available through Game Pass. It is a particularly appealing choice for a weekend session if you want a post-apocalyptic game with investigation, meaningful choices and a setting far removed from the usual American wasteland.
