Unreleased arcade projects can reveal how ambitious ideas developed before they reached production. Atari Games produced many such experiments, and its 1985 prototype JAMMIN’ is now easier to understand after its software was recovered and emulated.

Previously, knowledge of the game came mainly from blurry footage. The recovered data provides a much clearer look at an early rhythm-game concept and the hardware used during development.

What was Atari’s JAMMIN’?

Atari was going through considerable change in the mid-1980s following the company’s 1984 split. Many staff from its coin-operated division remained, allowing the arcade business to continue pursuing new ideas. New investment and part ownership from Namco also formed part of this period of activity.

Atari introduced its System I and System II platforms during this era, beginning with Marble Madness on System I in December 1984. The company was also exploring other advanced concepts, including a full 3D polygon racing game called Air Race.

Around the same time, Atari investigated ideas that could have placed it among the early developers of rhythm games. The Atari Dance Machine, for example, was conceived around motion sensors and laserdiscs. Whether that project shared staff with JAMMIN’ is not known.

JAMMIN’ was in development during 1985 and involved one Robert Weatherby. It also apparently made it as far as testing, although its failure to progress beyond that stage may explain why Atari never released it.

How the prototype played

Early footage showed a band recording music. The drummer played a sequence, and the player then had to repeat it without making a mistake, giving the design a structure similar to Simon Says. Nine buttons represented the instruments and supplied the game’s principal controls.

For years, that poor-quality footage was the main source of information. No prototype ROMs were known to be available, making it difficult to verify how the game operated beyond what could be seen in the video.

JAMMIN’ recovered from backup tapes

The situation changed when Dutchman2000 and SynaMax recovered the prototype from old VAX backup tapes. A few bytes needed to be repaired manually, after which David Haywood emulated the game. Haywood reported that it runs on hardware derived from Donkey Kong.

Dutchman2000 posted the recovery work on an Arcade-Museum forums thread, where it attracted renewed interest from arcade preservation and emulation communities.

The discussion also mentions other Atari prototypes. One unfamiliar project, EVOLUTION, may have explored an idea comparable to the later PC game Spore. OFF-ROAD is another title being examined, although recovering the code and adapting it for modern hardware is reportedly challenging.

Other potential discoveries involving Garfield, Gremlins and the E.T. Arcade Game would also provide valuable insight into Atari’s unreleased work.

A clearer look through MAME

Haywood’s MAME implementation has produced the clearest footage yet of JAMMIN’. It demonstrates the sequence-repeating gameplay and shows how the nine instrument buttons were intended to work.

The Donkey Kong-derived hardware is an unexpected detail. The game’s visual style might suggest Atari’s System I or System II, but development teams sometimes built a project on another board before moving it to the intended production platform.

The prototype also raises questions about how the design might have developed with further refinement. A note-based system, more closely resembling later BEMANI rhythm games, or a dedicated drum controller could have created a more expressive experience than the buttons shown here. Those possibilities are speculation, not documented features of the recovered game.

Why JAMMIN’ matters

The working ROMs had not yet been made public in the available information. For now, JAMMIN’ remains a distinctive example of Atari experimenting with music-focused arcade design before rhythm games became an established genre.

Its recovery also highlights the importance of preserving old boards, backup media and prototype software. The project is a useful case study for anyone researching arcade history and news, choosing an arcade machine for a home collection, or learning how arcade hardware and parts influence game design. Further discoveries could show how many other promising Atari concepts never reached production.
