Angel, the supernatural detective drama spun off from Buffy: The Vampire Slayer, is available to stream for free on Tubi. Across five seasons, the series developed from a noir-flavoured monster-of-the-week show into one of television’s most ambitious genre dramas.

Premiering in 1999 alongside the fourth season of Buffy, Angel follows David Boreanaz as the soul-stricken vampire leaves Sunnydale for Los Angeles. There, he works as a paranormal private investigator, taking on cases involving ghosts, demons and other supernatural threats.
The early episodes establish a deliberately episodic format. Angel receives help from Francis Doyle, played by Glenn Quinn, a half-demon whose visions reveal people in danger, and Cordelia Chase, played by Charisma Carpenter. The former Sunnydale mean girl abandons her Hollywood ambitions to help protect others.
Like its parent series, Angel takes time to find its strongest identity. The show began as a supernatural crime procedural before gradually expanding its character drama, moral questions and long-running mythology. It eventually reached a level that matched the best work in Buffy.

A cast that grew with the story
The first major turning point arrives when Doyle dies heroically midway through season one and passes his prophetic abilities to Cordelia. Wesley Wyndam-Pryce, played by Alexis Denisof, then joins the group. Once a pompous and ineffectual Watcher associated with Faith, Wesley begins as comic relief before becoming a determined occult adviser and one of the series’ most compelling figures.
Season two brings the ensemble into sharper focus. Street fighter Charles Gunn, played by J. August Richards, becomes part of the main cast, while demon bar owner Lorne, played by Andy Hallett, and physics expert Winifred Burkle, played by Amy Acker, add new skills and perspectives. Fred’s backstory is particularly unusual: she spent years trapped in a demon dimension.
The expanded team creates room for quick banter, unlikely romances and inventive solutions to supernatural problems. It also gives the series space to explore how different people respond to Angel’s pursuit of redemption.

Not every storyline works equally well. The arrival of Angel’s teenage son Connor leads to a convoluted plot involving an amnesiac Cordelia, her pregnancy and a coma from which she never wakes. The storyline is also difficult to revisit alongside Carpenter’s public allegations by Carpenter of harassment by creator Joss Whedon during her pregnancy, followed by her dismissal soon after she gave birth.
Although the eventual storyline involving Connor and the demonic Jasmine, played by Gina Torres, has effective ideas, Connor himself is widely regarded as one of the show’s more frustrating elements. Cordelia’s character deserved a more considerate conclusion.
Angel becomes darker than Buffy
The series’ central threat is Wolfram & Hart, a powerful law firm that turns the corruption of noir fiction into literal supernatural evil. Its employees serve demonic interests, and the firm spends four seasons opposing Angel’s team while pursuing a prophecy connected to his possible role in an apocalypse.
At the end of season four, Wolfram & Hart offers Angel and his colleagues control of its Los Angeles branch. The decision is an unmistakable bargain with the devil, and season five uses that premise to push the show into much bleaker territory.

Season five examines the cost of power and the fear of inadequacy through Gunn. Wolfram & Hart gives him an instant mental upgrade, allowing him to become an expert lawyer. When that ability begins to disappear, Gunn makes a knowingly dangerous deal to restore his knowledge, with consequences he could not fully anticipate.
Other major antagonists include the time-travelling demon Sahjhan and the vengeful vampire hunter Daniel Holtz. The season also introduces Spike, played by James Marsters, after Buffy has ended. Spike provides a sharp comic contrast to Angel while continuing his own redemption story.
The final season also follows an unstable young woman who develops Slayer powers and escapes a psychiatric institution in an attempt to kill Spike. Despite the show’s darker direction, season five balances severe consequences with moments of humour and delivers a finale filled with major surprises and satisfying resolutions.
Why Angel still matters
Angel could have relied solely on its connection to Buffy, but its willingness to change direction helped it stand independently. The series combines black comedy, horror, detective fiction and emotionally heavy drama, with episodes such as “A Hole in the World” and “Awakening” among its most devastating.
The crossover appearances from Buffy are more than simple cameos. They deepen the characters and demonstrate how a spinoff can expand an existing fictional world rather than merely repeat it. Viewers curious about the series can find more information in this Angel guide.
For Australian viewers checking out older genre television, Angel offers a five-season story that becomes more confident, stranger and more morally complicated as it progresses. It is currently available to stream for free on Tubi.
